Showing certain forums to registered members only

A cursory reading of “Off Topic” conclusively proves that we cannot be trusted to act courteously towards others.

There are a lot of sub-forums in off-topic that could be helpful for non-members and usually come up first in google searches.

I think that a lot of discussions in off-topic (found through google search) drive new members to join. I could be wrong.

I found myBroadband by being able to view the sub-forums, and answers to my questions coming up in Google search results

That's going to be a thing of the past so I also hope they improve the search function.
 
I thought only registered members can post. Is then not to see the discussions and the article. In any case anyboday can register or is there different type of registering that i do not know about?

This is about google being able to index forum posts, anybody can view the posts (even if not logged in) currently which includes the google indexing engine, thus unsavoury posts comes up in google searches on certain topics.
 
Honestly in two minds about this...

I think de-indexing the Off-Topic section would be a good start... but hiding it entirely might deter new registrations (and how can we abuse new people if they don't join).

If there are POPIA concerns though, then its an entirely different kettle of fish and maybe hiding Off-Topic would be a good move.

Just tell the advertisers that we all run Ad Blockers anyway, and that none of us take any notice of online adverts or ever respond to adverts anyway. Our brains have been long trained to subliminally filter out sales messages.

@rpm - Yes I agree if I see some of "vermin" posted and all of this open to a Google search.

If this decision has already been made then why are we being asked for feedback? Shouldn’t we be asked before the decision is made?

The way it's worded.... this is actually about the backlash because of the "sponsored article" spamming aint it?
