Showing certain forums to registered members only

I once shared a personal experience I had with a certain entity. They didn't take it well at all. I know.

There are a lot of sub-forums in off-topic that could be helpful for non-members and usually come up first in google searches.

I think that a lot of discussions in off-topic (found through google search) drive new members to join. I could be wrong.

Yes but mostly they're off topic so not helpful to the aims of the site IMO. I reckon people will still register and join but possibly it'll be more for tech chat and support.

Personally, I've always felt that if someone finds something offensive, then don't read it. If its harmful, then report it. Blanket censorship is not the way to go.

I think OT is moderated a lot less in general and from a business perspective can be polarising so there's that.

My 2c : I don't think I'd want to register to see forum posts as an outsider. Plus, it'll lead to lots of rubbish forced registrations for once off views.

However by deindexing the sub forums you should be good? I'm guessing alot of this is due to search traffic going where you don't want it. The "members only" wouldn't be necessary in that case?

But trial it by all mean, it's the only way you'll get conclusive data on it.

But aren't you a registered member already ? You have an account and sign in with it.

For example there was the lady on the news recently who made certain comments about Jews on FB and was taken to task for it. Much worse comments are made here regularly and it would be great if those posters face the same consequences.

So how does a "members only" section work on a forum where we are all registered members already?

How do we know which of the forums are going to be affected? Is the only way to log on without signing in?
I can't see how this move is supposed to work, and what its purpose is?

It hides Off-Topic (and presumably all subforums of that section) from the public. So random internet user can't stumble on Jokes About Religions thread or Complaints About Dstv thread or whatever.

thats why rpm upgraded me last year from MyBB Lite to the MyBB Enterprise Edition, they even threw in a MyBB Hoody as well for signing up

Many people view off topic without creating an account or logging in.

So this will have no affect on the registered members here who are posting.

But it won't allow randoms from outside to view the posts until they register

How so? These are ostensibly anonymous nicks. I know that some of us are not that anonymous, but for the rest, how would legal action be applied?
