SIM swap fraud suspect caught: MTN

ABSA employee?

Similar to Vodacom, MTN will also be implementing a system to authorise SIM swap by SMS, Zondo said. Unlike Vodacom’s system, however, MTN will wait until a subscriber has confirmed the SMS request to swap SIMs before proceeding.

Does this help if your phone is stolen? IE, you don't have the old SIM to authorise the swap to new one??

You'd probably have to present them with a police case number?

Now he must name his friends from ABSA. Coz only people with substantial amounts in their accounts were scammed.

I just wanted to post the same thing. It will be a hassle if you lose your phone or it is stolen, but in my opinion it is worth the hassle for the extra security. It's not like you lose your phone every other day

Went to get a sim swap from a normal sim to nano sim the other day. They refused to accept my drivers license of proof. Wanted green bar coded ID. Are fake drivers licenses the main cause for the sim swaps?

The chances of someone having your banking passwords and having your stolen sim is quite low.

Though, this will probably force people on MTN to have a new phone number if they lose their sim. Not many people like to change numbers. I have had the same phone number for about 15 years.

That police station has been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently.

Google it, and you'll see.

It's a freaking joke as it is clearly possible to swap the SIM without any form of identification.

somehow i felt that this suspect is being tracked because of the way he was executing his activities one after another, but like a rat on a cheese he was oblivious to that. :p

What about broken sim cards ? How will they handle that ?
The Confirmation mechanism won't work; unless a sim swop on a busted SIM can continue if a response hasn't been received after 24+ hours.

You would have thought MTN had their own internal anti-fraud division that would have picked this up.
