Simple, cheap router?

Hi, I'm about to get an ADSL connection and I wanted to know what would be the cheapest router necessary. I wasn't even planning on getting one until I learnt that routers act as hardware firewalls.

I am a very simple internet user. I don't LAN, and I don't have any product that uses wireless (but may possibly buy an iPad in a few months). Still, all I'm looking for is the most basic ADSL router for my requirements. If I have to pay a few extra rands to ensure it's future-proof, I don't mind. I just don't want to spend on stuff I don't need. I've noticed the prices range from R 350 - R 1,200+. Will the basic Billion router for R 400 from Buycomputers.co.za do the trick?

Thanks in advance.

what package are you going with? quite a few ISPs give you a router with eh package thats yours after 12-24 months,
In my experience if its got wifi it has a build in hub, what modals are you looking at?

I'm going with Axxess or Afrihost 384 uncapped. Starting off small for now since I still have a few months worth of an MTN 3g contract. I don't know if those ISP's provide a router. Could you clarify for me?

Check out something like a dlink 2640u. It has wifi and goes for about R600.

no they don't
that R409 billion looks good for your needs, just note you will only be able to connect one PC to it

on another note I wouldn't suggest Afrihost uncapped, there have been alot of complaints

thanks for the advice, guys. I'll check out the dlink.

Actually, the reason I chose afrihost is coz a quick google search (i think which led me to these boards) recommended it. Which ISP would be good for online gaming?

the cheap uncapped accounts are not recommend for gaming because of the shaping, if you value your latency then look at unshaped packages

I think the cheapest basic ADSL router is the D-link DSL-2500U for about R250 ... But like mentioned above , maybe it's a good idea to get a wireless one for the future.

For gaming try Webafrica

Openweb uncapped is usually unshaped if you don't use more than 30gb.

Sounds good. I have a friend that recommends Openweb too.

Online gaming isn't an extremely high priority, but it would be nice.

If you're not using more than 50GB/month, then you might as well just go with Afrihost or with WebAfrica's data bundles. The like WebAfrica Titan specials are really amazing.

I've got a Canyon router, cheap with no problems at all. Google it, available locally. I agree that u rather get the wi-fi modem now so as to save frustration later on.

Also, check used if your budget is less.

lol, alright, enough dancing (as they say). I've decided on this one: please tell me if it's fine (sorry for the multiple posts)

It seems to have everything: ADSL support (although it says "Cable/DSL", don't think there's a diff), wireless 300 and four ports, all for R 691. A lot more than R 400, but it has everything the expensive ones have, am i right?

See it here: TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Home Router

Let me know so that I can go ahead with the purchase.

if you only need a router that simply connects you to the internet without wifi, lan ect, why not just get a adsl modem, I'm sure they are much cheaper than routers?

Memories. My first router was a single port Telkom router. If I'm not mistaken it cost R2k :D

Alright, did some more scrounging around. Here's a good one: Billion 5200GRC

This one has all features too. I think I'll go for it. It even has a good reviews from the little I've searched about it. Let me know if it's a bad idea, otherwise...

Personal experience with Billion. Not the same model, but I am wary of them. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/263364-Attenuation-and-SNR-issue-with-Billion-router

Before the Billion I had an old Planet modem and it worked VERY well for me. Lasted about 5 years before Telkom broke it. But it was only ADSL-1 capable, so I would've had to replace it anyway.

Grrr, so many choices! Alright! I've come to the decision that the 2 features I need most are an ADSL modem and good wireless. I don't want to buy a router alone by mistake and then realize I don't have a modem. Soooo....

This here provides both. Please just tell me that it'll work and I won't have to buy something else, and I can order it today. Thanks alot for the help guys, but I need to stop overthinking this.

So, will this solve my problems: See here

Also, when the Telkom guy comes to install my line, does he hook it up to my PC and get the connection working too? I heard you can do the line thing yourself, but I'd rather pay for this. Thanks again for all the help
