SIX senior officials from the uMhlathuze municipality in Richards Bay have opted to waive their rights to an annual performance bonus and instead decided the money should be channelled to where it is needed most - the community.
The bonuses vary according to pay scales, but one of the officials said the money would be R50,000 in average. This would mean the officials are forfeiting about R300,000.
Acting municipal manager Nkosinathi Nhleko and senior managers Mbali Ndlovu (corporate services), Mxolisi Kunene (finance), Sifiso Mdakane (technical and infrastructure), Vukani Sibeko (community services) and Lindani Khoza (city development) unanimously agreed to surrender their bonuses so that the money could be channelled towards development projects in the community.
University of KwaZulu-Natal analyst Zakhele Ndlovu said the move needed to be celebrated. "It's a positive development, something that shows a certain level of maturity and caring."
