The Ematic also has all these ports.

I have both and the Ematic is the safer one to go for. It is also already on Android 9.

Android 9. Great.
But is R400 price difference between binge and ematic really worth it just to have Android 9 and the same ports/specs.
If i can get the ematic now for same price as binge and mi box (both R999) then i might change my mind.

The ematic also has a SD card slot, which the Binge Box does not have. (Nice to increase your onboard storage.)

If you are 100% sure you will not use Netflix, do go for the Binge. But if there is a slight possibility that you will get Netflix, the ematic is a safe bet.

And the price difference is R300.

Sd card slot is nice.
But i still dont know about the price....i can add an external hd or flash drive and use it as internal storage too
 
My Skyworth box wont boot up suddenly, and gives an error message that it needs a factory reset.
Thing is that the remote wont allow me to do this and neither will a USB keyboard. The box has no factory reset button on it.
How would one do a factory reset?

There's a factory reset procedure for the device stuck on an update and this might just help you.

The hardware may be the same - but it's the certifications you're paying for. That extra R400 is going to save you many headaches going forward.

A side loaded Netflix is not the same as having a certified unit by a long shot.

My take is *if* you don't care about Netflix, get the Binge. But it's a no brainer to get the Ematic over the Skyworth if you subscribe to Netflix...

Nah the Mibox is currently under 1K in Makro.
 
The other day my box suddenly switched it self to Korean for some reason

I am subscribed to netflix but the tv i want to use the binge on, already has netflix installed and it plays in 4k, HDR and 5.1 on the TV's netflix.

My other tv is a skyworth tv with Android built in already and that has netflix also playing in 4k, hdr and 5.1 as well.

ps: have any of you checked out the Mecool mk9 pro? Beats the Ematic, Mi, Binge and i can get it for less than the Binge and yes its google certified.
Dolby vision and dolby atmos working on it as well.

But what I'm saying is that the Skyworth is not Netflix certified and therefore if you need Netflix on an Android TV, then this is not the right box for you and nothing you can do is going to make up for it. In that case, rather spenf a tiny bit more and something that has been approved. If - however - you wish to save a few Rand and you have another device with which to watch Netflix, then you can take this and use it as a Plex end point or whatever you want to do.

But the bottom line is that this Android TV cannot do Netflix and never will.

Well, no ... you're wrong.

It suffers the same problem as the Skyworth in that Netflix have not approved it?
In other words, you're going to have the same Netflix issues with a Mecool as you will with the Skyworth

Google Certification is the easy certification to get and often an Android TV is Google Certified but not Netflix (ie Binge and Mecool)

You're looking at hardware and thinking 'wow cool' - but the software and certifications is what is important.

Hi. I have a Skyworth Set Top Box, model HPA02. The Google play store is not the same as on my phone. Is there a way to correct this? Thanks

No - you can't correct it.

But that's a good thing !

As mentioned, there are two flavors of Android - (1) mobile and (2) Android TV)

The Android mobile OS is for phones / tablets and it has it's own app store with millions of apps designed for phones / tablets
The Android TV OS is for TV and it has it's own store with thousands of apps designed for TVs.

The apps you see are designed from the ground up to work on a 16:9 TV with larger, clearer icons - as well as navigation from a remote control (as opposed to a touch control from a phone) . So although only a fraction of apps of the Android mobile store, everything in the Android TV store is quality and made for a TV.

Skyworth has the better OS / app store.

Thanks. But how can I get the "normal " Google Play Store onto my TV Box?
