Skyworth Binge TV Android media box - Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Will this cable work on Mi Box for multichannel audio?

YES it does.

Been using it since day 1 more than 18 months ago

I initially heard the same - but now heard otherwise.

Do you have a link ?

Was on an over the sea forum, for Mi-Box and similar devices, sorry no link. When I am idle, and have nothing to do, will see if I find any thing new on this.

So after the remote which suddenly gave up the ghost, and the constant audio issues (I suspect missing codec) I've replaced this box with a Mi S - so far I can only say I regret not doing this sooner, I will be replacing the second box I use in Cape Town when I am back down there next month as well.

I think this Box was only ever intended to be a prototype - unfortunately I can't recommend it to anyone in its current state :(

When the next generation of this box is released, I may take another look at it, but as things currently stand, I've been incredibly disappointed by the Binge Box

@Skyworth - how much testing was actually done on this box before release? As in sending it home with employees, issuing sample units to reviewers etc? I feel like a lot of issues I've experienced would have been picked up by such real world "in the wild" tests?

@Segg, what audio issues did you have?

Certain (most) videos playing without audio on Plex, issues common on both boxes, only occurs on the Binge Box, and only way around is to force a transcode on the server

Basically, most times I wanted to watch something, it turned into a chore

A friend of mine has a new Lit Box and he has to do the same to get sound on most movies.

I use Kodi as my media player and have no issues playing any videos so far. And I download a big variety of hd files.

Extensive testing was done. However, we have noted a lot of people are disappointed with stock Android TV, and prefer a more customized experience with more built in apps and codecs. We are aware of some issues, but by in large these are common to most Android TV 8.0 units. We are sorry you had a bad experience there.

Well its all part of the final product development at the end of the day - I'll definitely be interested to try out the next model when its released :)

We're reluctant to launch another retail Android TV product without certain streaming providers coming on board. We'll keep talking to them, but it isn't something we can directly control.

Any reason why these ‘certain’ streaming providers don’t allow the device? Looking at the promotional article by Nology to promote the Ematic on Mybroadband, they were quick to point out,

If you are a Netflix customer or interested in signing up for Netlfix, the second thing to look for when considering a streaming box, is whether the box has been Netflix approved.

For the Netflix Android TV app version that will optimise your TV experience and will allow streaming of Netflix’s 4K content, very few streaming box devices are approved by Netflix.

A good indication to look for is whether the box has a remote control with a Netflix button. If not; it is not approved for the Netflix Android TV version.

Furthermore, if there is any request, instruction or note not to update the installed version, it is another good indication that the applicable box isn’t approved by Netflix.

Is it a device thing, a brand thing or a remote thing? I mean, Nology launched the Ematic with the support.

I can totally understand that, but aren't you guys associated with Skyworth China? Being such a major player, surely they have some muscle to help out?

Mine works 100% although I don't give it a hard time, it's in my room and gets used very seldom. I have a Nvidia shield in the main av room.

Netflix certification involves both in-device changes, and requires the remote to have a button. Netflix will work fine if the remote doesn't have the button, but it is a condition of certification, so it is a good rule of thumb.

We do have Netflix approved devices in other markets, and we do not export them to this region because of our existing relationship with Netflix. Netflix have opted not to partner with us in the retail market at this time choosing another partner instead.

It's a fairly complex situation but we have to abide by and respect their decision, though we continue to engage with them. That's about all the information we can give through this channel.

Region locking, effectively, and exclusive partnership agreements for different regions. As usual the customer gets screwed. Not your guys fault.

If Netflix requires the remote to have the Netflix button before giving Netflix certification, how would you get certification since the remote that came with the Binge box doesn't have said button?
Supply all your customers with a new remote seems unlikely.
If I read between the lines here, Netflix certification is not going to happen for the Binge Box.
Feel free to correct me in this regard.

Telkom was able to do this, but yes, we are not going to get Netlfix certification on this box.
