Slow VM Data Speeds

Last night early evening it was very slow, but this morning it's ok,just when downloading a page on this site it takes forever.all round it's okay.

My VM GPRS speed is allot better than what I've had with Vodacom.
Virgin GPRS has FAR MORE uptime than Vodacom in my area.
My VM has started to stall/disconnect about a week ago, but its still better and cheaper than Vodacom, and the disconnects arent that frequent.
Luckilly I live about 1-2km away from a Virgin (cell-c) tower so on my phone I choose to manually select network and the choose "virgin" so it doesnt roam on vodacom's network :)

Everyone knows that there is problems at the moment with Virgin Mobile Data. Some of us gets constant disconnects and slow speeds.

I for one get disconnects in the evening say between 20:00 and 23:00 and in the morning between 07:00 and 09:00. Most of the other times it's fine with disconnects every now and then but not alot.

My speeds is fine. Mostly between 100kb/s and 180kb/s. Then there is times where I only get 20kb/s - 80kb/s.

I haven't had any problems with not getting connected at all.

I sent a e-mail to Rugan Naicker at Virgin Mobile yesterday. He assured me that they are working day and night to solve this problem. I believe them. I mean, do you guys really think they don't want us all to use their 50c/MB service?

I'll wait, just as I've waited for the 128k sim. We got the new sims, now just wait for the data issues to be solved.

Come one guys, don't be so hard on them. They are using Cell-C's service after all.

Hi piesang, have you fwd my details to VM yet, for the 128k card? did not get any call yet.

I'm currently have to keep my phone plugged in the power to charge, and that is why I went to get the Datacard.
ps: my connection is fine, although I only get gprs where I am, no disconnections ever.

But what if they told you that the tv was manufactured by Sony, would you still blame them or would you blame Sony in that instance.

To be honest I'd probably blame both, Sony for manufacturing it in the first place and the other company for reselling it under their brand, which to me is a statement of confidence in the product, or should be anyway.

I don't see any reason why anyone should switch over to the more expensive service when the problems do in fact lie with the more expensive service. I just want as many people as possible to know that they have the option of getting cheaper and better service by switching their phones to use only Cell-C's network.

I agree with you and the more perople are informed about what's on offer the better, just don't think you can absolve Virgin/Cell C of responsibility for the problems on a service they're selling you.

Not absolve, but be understanding, they are offering the service at a quarter of the price after all. For me price counts 50% in a broadband offering so I am happy with the high speeds I get and don't expect it to be without problems. I am thinking of sending them an email informing them of the issue. Piesang, do you have the details of who I should contact?

Well,yesterday i had a wonderful connection.
I connected @ about 19:00,the connection held all the way. Till i myself disconnected it @ 00:00! nice,

All is well with my Virgin Mobile GPRS connection again. No Disconnects,No data-stalls and No 'Non-Returning-Data(no internet)' Errors!

Welcome back Virgin Mobile! :D

Worked better for me last night too. But antivirus updates still takes donkeys years. Yahoo messenger worked ok too. Mail download into outlook express worked faster. Web pages still slower than before :(

What anti-virus do you use? I use AVG and it just updated @ 4.3KB/s,nice and fast. But i wont stress too much if the speed degraded,at least it is now Usable!! And it is faster than i got @ VC,and way cheaper! The constant data stalls etc etc made Virgin almost unusable, now i can (ab)use it again.

Even if the speeds dropped to a VC-level,it would still be a great offer @ 50c..or kinda.

oh,btw....with Vodacom my AVG updates ran @ 1-3KB/s (this varied allot!)
Now with VM I rarely get anything below 2KB/s. Average @ 4KB/s. It max @ about 7KB/s. :D

"Everyone knows??" They will by the time I'm finished...LOL..

Sounds VERY erratic to me and disconnects at peak time when you want to use it most. Methinks they are getting their internet at a discount because it only works off-peak :D Oh and I have experienced more than once NO CONNECTION at all. "Internet full" says Virgin.

[email protected] <-----?:D ?

As far as I know there have been problems for a while - at least from Sunday. That's almost a whole week. Just how hard are they working if there are still problems tonight? I asked them to call about data problems on Sunday. Still no call. I also e-mailed but still no reply.

Guys on hellpeter say it's takin a long time to organise the sim.

I don't believe that is their main problem.

Your connection speeds are much better than mine  I also use avg. The speed starts of around 4 kB/s then just withers down to 200 b/s or less. The other thing is when i sent an email with an attachment it seemed to upload much faster than the download speeds i was getting. I have to use opera mini on my phone to view this site. Takes very very long on pc if it loads at all :(

Maybe a bad time now...it updated at 4-8KB/s now!! I'll do it again on Sunday&Monday,in Peak times and then i'll report back.

Try Vodacom during peak on gprs. They should GIVE their internet at a discount because it only works off-peak. I still don't get the "Internet full" thingy. If their towers are saturated you shouldn't be able to connect at all, but there is a connection, it's just that there's a "leak in the pipe" somewhere. Also it shouldn't cut off existing connections. It should just slow down gradually and instead it goes from full speed straight to dead. It's "missing internet" like someone unplugged it to do some maintenance. I just wish they would keep their personnel informed.

Same symptom I get on Opera sometimes, which gets corrected after a restart of Opera. It seems that some applications are waiting endlessly for lost packets to arrive not being able to send more until they do. Try downloading the updates manually if that's possible. You might be surprised to get up to 15KB/s. My upload speed alone is ~3KB/s although speedtest to london reported it to be 14.7 with a peak of 16.

I had a disconnect just now @ [12:44:59]...this is rare! This is like number 2 or 3 i've had with VM till date.

My Virgin Mobile internet is unusable today. So I inserted my MTN sim into my data card.

It connected immediately and it took me 2 minutes to open this page to make a post. So now I wonder, at R2/MB I should get much better speeds but I don't. So I'd rather use Virgin Mobile and get disconnects every now and then at 50c/MB than paying R2/MB and get terrible speeds.

According to Skeptik the guys on Hellopeter complains because they say it takes ages to receive the new sims. I don't think they know about MYADSL.

Everyone on MYADSL who asked for new sims did receive it according to me. The reason I say so is because I asked everyone to please let me know if they don't receive the new sims and so far no-one said they didn't. And for those who did I forwarded their details to Virgin Mobile again as urgent and they did receive their sims.
