What are the options for book keeping software in the SA context?

Bought Pastel's My Business the other day for . . my business. Seems fairly comprehensive - and it was on sale :D

Pastel makes me want to chunder.

Then again, pretty much all bookkeeping makes me want to chunder.

How much was it? At what store was the special?

Incredible Corruption have a special.

I think the one thing to think of though is their core competency. Pastel only started going after the smaller business market after packages like (Quickbooks - no I dont work for them) started taking control. The smaller packages are cheaper AFAIK and were designed for a small business.

Pastel has its integration advantages should the business grow and require other Pastel Products, but then again, this will probably require an upgrade of Pastel as well.

For smaller businesses, I much prefer Quickbooks which is really intuitive and easy to use for those who have never used an accounting package before...

Thanks, I own a Pastel cd, but only the invoice one, IIRC.

Never heard of Quickbooks, will have a look at them.

Chances are good that the auditor would prefer that you use Pastel over Quicken.

But chances that you have an auditor for a small business?

Depends on how the company is registered. CC, Pty Ltd, Partnership etc.

Pty Ltd requires audited financials, but CCs and partnerships dont.

Anyone know of accounting packages that support Afrikaans? Doing things in English is all fine and good, but it's easy to get things mixed up.

I wrote my own accounting system using PHP and MySQL... :)

At first I tried to look for some simple open source app, but every one I found had so many options that I didn't need that they just confused me.

I had started by just having a simple mysql database to maintain client records - then I figured I may as well add support to the system for producing invoices with a few clicks. :)
From there I figured the system may as well record which invoices where paid or outstanding - which lead to a simple sort of financial tracking system.

Over some time I've added features as I need them, but it's still fairly simple.. ;)

I wouldn't necessary recommend this route to anyone - but if you have the ability and just need a very simple accounting system it could be worth a shot. :D

I last saw it at Incredible Corruption for r699 which is r300 less than at many other stores (ie Makro).

Turbocash. And it's free! :)

I tried it about 2 years ago. Kept throwing up errors and couldn't get it to work properly. So I think I'll pass.

Those that have Pastely My Business, can you change the language or is it only an English version?

Went out and got myself a copy of PASTEL My Business. Seems to be quite a nice program, but I'm still playing around getting to know it. The sales assistant at IC said that it would allow you to change the language during installation, but it never asked me to do so, so I guess I'll have to stick to English.

Update:
Phoned PASTEL to enquire whether it would be possible to change the language. Seems that the sales assistant at Incredible Corruption didn't know what she was talking about (no surprise there!) - you CANNOT change the language on the My Business edition.

Pastel is a very oddly written Program in my opinion, from a software development point of view. But yes, IT is very good in its job. and we can just give th Auditors a disk with the info on it instead of huge boxes of files.
