Smart TV boxes for under R1,000

There's only one Google box worth getting for around R1k...

Ethernet + Double the storage, and no Xiaomi Bloatware for R1100. No brainer.

Very weird, so does my Shield TV Pro
Not so happy with the latest NVIDIA Shield Android TV Launcher update.
The Launcher sucks compared to the previous 2 panel version with the apps down the side and their shows next to the app.
Been trying a few alternative launchers - still looking for alternative launchers.

I'm happy with my Mi devices. Made the dumb TVs smart and useful. Netflix is not supported on older versions of IOS but the last working version still allows me to access that content on older apple devices so I'm sure a similar trade off will occur for apple TV devices.

Must be a recent addition, wasn't available the last time I checked.

Ethernet is a non-thing for me in a TV box. It's within a meter of my main mesh node, and I'd rather use my gigabit ports for the devices that really need it like my consoles and main mesh node...

My Apple tv actually updates.
So now it does get it?
So you have HDR10+?
Or you don't have HDR10+?

You keep changing your mind on what 'you' believe.

I think the real issue is that you can't believe that Apple does something like this and you're battling to come to terms. But judging from the posts, yo've gone through denial & anger & bargaining ... when do you hit depression?

@Jean Claude Vaaldamme check this :

"but the 3rd Generation brings support for HDR10+ and features a slightly more expansive list of compatible audio and video formats ...

How does that make you feel?
How does it make you feel knowing Apple intentionally left out something?
How does it make you feel that the same 'latest OS' is different on each model & this isn't about hardware?
How does it make you feel that Apple isn't much different to other electronic companies with updates?
How does it make you feel that you're told what to think & have thoughts of your own?

@backstreetboy Does a device using Netflix AV1 codec have a different picture than one without AV1?
I mean is the Apple TV using 8-bit streams because it can't do AV1 streams yet?
Do you think my Android TV with HDR10+ and AV1 couls deliver a better image?

From Netflix :

  • We always encode at the highest available source resolution and frame rate. For example, for titles where the source is 4K and high frame rate (HFR) such as “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”, we produce AV1 streams in 4K and HFR. This allows us to present the content exactly as creatively envisioned on devices and plans which support such high resolution and frame-rate playback

  • All AV1 streams are encoded with 10 bit-depth even if AV1 Main Profile allows both 8 and 10 bit-depth. Almost all movies and TV shows are delivered to Netflix at 10 or higher bit-depth. Using 10-bit encoding can better preserve the creative intent and reduce the chances of artifacts (e.g., banding).

I don't want to be funny, but I bought the world most advanced streaming device on the planet ... and when I got home, I realised I was using Android TV for Amazon Prime HDR10+ ... using Android TV for AV1 content ... and using my old Samsung TV when my kids wanted to watch interactive stuff. The same as when I bought the most advanced smartphone on the planet, I was turning to Android phones and other solutions to make it work correctly .

Yes like always you to dumb to understand anything. I said I get updates every time there is an update.
You talking about a new feature.

Anyway you know the drill. As always I do not argue with you running in circles with the same shyte over and over again, year after year. I have said what I wanted. Everyone can read the comments and see who is right and who is the fool.
You can now carry on. See you already at AV1. Next will be Snapseed and Instagram. Then we will hear how great your Huawei 50 Much Nice Pro 100X is. Then you going to go on about the Apple secret gathering and then how you getting section banned without reason only because you speak the truth.

Been there, done that. You do you, I have said what I wanted.
Carry on.

I bought a Nova Box and am stuck on Android TV 11. Gave it to a family member.

Apple TV have the below ... maybe they're continuing with the old generation, so 4th gen = HD and 5th gen = 4K 1st gen?

1st Gen = 2006
2nd Gen = 2010
3rd Gen = 2012
4th Gen / HD = 2015

Then they jumped to 4K and had :

4K 1st Gen = 2017
4K 2nd Gen = 2021
4K 3rd Gen = 2022

So if I where to buy the 128Gig. version, with an ethernet plug, it would be the latest?

Ah - so you don't get new features?
But you said earlier you do get new features?
with you running in circles with the same shyte over and over again, year after year
Well, considering you ay we have this chat often, you seemed oblivious to the fact that features are limited
Everyone can read the comments and see who is right
Thank you
and who is the fool
Don’t be so hard on yourself, Boomer. I’m sure we don’t all see you as the fool

That 4K 3rd generation?

It’s the latest, yup. More powerful than a PS5 … and that’s only an A15.

There are rumours about a new 4th gen in 6-12 months
