I have 2 phones. Pay as u go and a contract phone. My problem is that I cannot
contact my daughter in America by SMS or voice. Her friends can with VODACOM. I have tried with 1555 with no success. Please help.:( :( :(

Have you tried sms'ing via skype? Its cheaper and replies will still go to your phone. I often have trouble sending sms' to Pakistan via Vodacom but with skype they go through right away.

Voice and SMS? Then MTN has two problems in their network. There is a USA NDC missing i.e. +1xxx. Northern America use an integrated dialling plan i.e. Canada, USA, Mexico and all the little islands international code starts with +1. Normally only SMS would not work because they do not have roaming with the network concerned but by the fact that voice also does not work (roaming agreement not required) indicated they are missing an NDC. Contact MTN they problem is explaining it to customer care - better get one of the MTN reps involved.

I also use Skype. Never had problams with VC either though!
Could be any number of reasons why it didnt work for me. One thing I do know for sure is I pay a fraction of the cost sending them overseas via skype :D

Good day,

If you can PM me with more details e.g. where in the US your daughter is your two cell phone numbers and her cell phone or contact number and I'll investigate and provide feedback.

Thanks MTNDD

Thanks MTNDD and all. My SP made me to fill in a form today and they say it will work in 24 hrs. We will see. I don't know much about SKYPE. I will check it out,
but here in Simons Town we have no Edge or 3G so I don't know if it will work.

That feature of skype can be done regardless of the type of internet connection you have :D

The 24hrs have long gone and I still cannot contact her in Florida. I use +17726etc.
If I use a skype phone then must she also have one?

The form was most probably used to open international calling. Sending international sms does not required international calling - there is either a global title missing in the MTN or they are not a roaming partner of MTN i.e. its a network problem not a SP problem.

If you use Skypeout you can register your phone number as the originating number so that all sms replies will come to your mobile even though you send them using Skype. The other party does not need skype as you create them as a Skypeout contact and the SMS is send to their phone.

No, she doesnt - you dont even need a skype "phone" either - just the software on your computer and some airtime.

international sms's are a tricky business :(

They are no different to local inter-network SMS's - if you have a signalling connection to aremote network (i.e. requirement for roaming) you are 99% there its just switch and inter-networking SCCP database implementation and maintenance.

yeah but the agreements needed to send and recieve are different from the ones needed to implement a phone call.

Hi all:)

I've been using mobisms for international smss'. Works very well. It even has a java app to send smss' via the data connection on your phone. By the way, whats the cost of skype smss'?
