So i made a switch to Android from IOS...

I  my Sony Xperia Z1 :p

Had a Samsung galaxy SII before.

S4 was out when I got my phone. I don't regret my choice :)

The S4 had some issues at the time, and looked just too plastic to me.

The Z1 is mooi phone and NO lag what so ever.

Ur doin it wrong. :p

This is the only S4 I have heard of with these issues.

Is the software/firmware up to date?
+1. Had 3 iPhone 5 and had many androids... I liked my S4 quite a bit and never had these issues. Reset it to factory settings and hopefully all will be well :)

Oh I don't. But have also gone through the experiment.

However what you say is true. The users are fundamentally different and apart from a few who toe the line it will almost always be one or the other.

The things Android people hate about iOS is are the same things the iOS people love and the same applies inversely.

"Making it work" doesn't come into the equation when I buy something. I don't do it when my cars or my bikes...certainly not going to do it with my phones/tablets.

Each to their own.

I don't think you need to 'make' android phones work, especially the new models. I got the S5 now and it works great out of the box but within a day I change everything on the phone, I use beta versions of nearly everything, so you get the latest features but you have to deal with the bugs. I am fine with that, it has thought me loads.

But for work I use my ipad and iphone without touching anything, I dont even download personal apps to use on them because I use them as basically 'dumb' devices to do simple tasks. The closed walls of ios are a big problem for me but I can see the attraction for many. My wife will always use an iphone, I provide support to her especially when she cant get simple media in and out of it. She likes the looks and easy interface, same for my parents I got them iphones and ipads becuase its simple and works.

I think for me I am not an android fanboy or apple hater but I realise that I prefer tinkering with my devices, not so with cars or bikes.

I would have considered getting the AppleWatch if the battery life is great and and I could use it with any phone, there is no smartwatch I would consider yet.

What the OP did was the same as buying a Ferrari then fitting a aftermarket chip to it. When it doesn't have the performance he expected he goes on a rant against Ferrarri.

One mistake being made...

Please do not compare phones to cars, rather compare them to PCs.

When you buy a new PC it needs update, and need it periodically. LOL, even the nokia windows phones have had updates...

Electronic technology advances at such a rate that by the time you get the newly launched product, the next product is possibly already in the planning stages.

I got my Z1 when they first launched last Oct 2013. Now we're in Sept 2014 and there is already talk of a Z3

When I got my Win8 laptop, I barely had it and Win 8.1 update was being released.

Even linux PCs get updates.

Electronics and updates are married for the lion's share of the products out there. Even printers, modems and graphics card (to name a few) get firmware updates...

Using the rest of the customizeble features are up to you.

Pic of the other half, fav pet, or just plain green this week. Making it different the next.
Customising roms were made for people who wish to play with they phones
beta apps - well someone needs to test it. And many are impatient to try the new products. If you install these be prepared for bugs and be willing to give the app owner feedback.

Android definitely isn't as snappy as ios but the stock and less cluttered versions are getting there with every update, something which Google is striving towards. The biggest problem here is that you took a Samsung which, out of all the major android players, has the worst software and build quality. HTC, LG or Sony are the way to go.

And what exactly did i do?
If you are referring to me installing a launcher, it lagged before that, with that, and now still after that.

Look its probably not a bad phone, and i'm just used to the smoothness of Apple, it just irritates me that everyone that owns a Android phone will always rant about how fantastic their phones are and how supreme they are against Apple, All im saying is i have had experiences with both, and the performance of the S4 in superior to that of the Iphone5.

I develop for both Android and iOS. I honestly want to chuck my test iPhone (yes, that's all I use it for) out the window. How in the hell can the same thing work 100% in Android, yet iOS is an uphill battle? Google maps keeps crashing my glorious Apple device - in fact it took me 5 minutes to turn the damn thing back on yesterday

Additionally to test an application in Android: post the link and tell the user to allow installations from other sources.

The same process with Apple? Login to developer.apple.com, reset password (because it keeps bloody making me!), login again, generate a certificate, add the app and generate and ID, change the app ID, go to a Mac (again, just a Mac for development purposes, you can't use Windows!), generate a certificate, convert the certifcate to p12, copy the certificate, add the certificate to the app, create a provisioning profile, download iTunes, wait, install iTunes, start iTunes, plug the iPhone in, get the phone UDID, log back into developer.apple.com (possibly change your password again!), go to the app development section, add the phone UDID (a 32 letter ID which you can't copy and have to manually record), link the phone to the app in the provisioning profile, download the provisioning profile, add the provisioning profile to app, recompile and then post the link.

On a side note: the same thing applies for Windows and OS X.

Edit: don't tell me this hell of a process is a about security, I saw Jennifer Lawrence's tits, just like everyone else!

Yeah i cant comment on that, I had a HTC years back Android 2.3, that was a piece of Sh...., then got the iphone5, and now the S4.
Im getting a Lumia 1320 at work this month as well, cant wait to play with that :D

I suspect you'll like it more than Samsung/Android, but not as much as iPhone/iOS. ;)

Oh and a comment from my clients (who all have iPhones):

"Wow, the app looks so much better on your S5!" (admittedly my S5 is about twice the size of the puny iPhones)

Don't worry, soon enough they'll all have iPhone 6/6 Plusses.

What i hate about the Samsung/Android
For a phone with such superior hardware, the phone lags
Yes, I also find this. Even on the S5
The touch screen is not as responsive as well as the Iphone, i keep making typing mistakes and same things i have to press several times before it registers
I will agree with you on this one too, even on the S5
The Back button which is also touch is not very responsive
I don't really find this one, but okay
Apps hangs or freezes
Does happen more on Android yes
Phone freezes (might just be a long lag)
I also find this

Customizable themes, even though i love them, they make the phone slow.
I don't really think this one is true though, maybe if you have a live wallpaper

The settings menu is all over the place
I found iOS menu as confusing the first time I used it. Was just because I was used to androids way of doing it - so maybe this is subjective?

The more apps you load, the more the phone freezes
Just think if you have a few bad ones

Whatsapp is absolutely horrible compared to IOS
This I just can't agree with you on

Wifi drops
Never had this problem with all my galaxys from the original S to now

3G drops (even though it says its connected) and i have to restart the phone
Also never had this problem

Conclusion
Well, to be honest, i got the phone since certain members on this forum goes on in every thread on how superior Samsung/Android is, so they sort of convinced me. What i can tell you now is that you have to live in a dream world and bullshtting yourself if you tell everyone Samsung is superior to Apple, Android Superior to IOS, there are certain features which are nice, but since i had the Iphone, the phone has not frozen once, not a single app has stopped working once, there is absolutely NO lag, what is the use of having 2Gb ram with fcking 8 cores if your phone can’t even scroll through the menu pages without freezing? (and apparently this happens on all android phones, even the king of the hill G3)
My brother also has a S4, i asked him how he lives with this phone and he said he thinks it’s fantastic, (in the same breath he said i must remember he is not used to anything better coming from a BB)
The simplicity of the Iphone is just so much better, a phone which on paper should be completely inferior to the Samsung but still be superior on most aspects.

The day Iphone fixed its lame-ASS battery, there will be absolutely no reason to move over to Android.

So to anyone and everyone who lurks on the forums, forcing their “superior Android/Samsung” down everyone's throats, please guys, just stop. Its better on paper which does not seem to mean anything in real life.
Hopefully Android L addresses a lot of these issues. The touch sensitivity is something Samsung probably has to look into, can’t think Android is to blame for that.

Thank heavens i only have to work with this phone until end November/Beginning December.

I mostly blame the bloatware on the phone, but even the custom roms performance isn't that good. But I also think that the restrictions of iOS is what puts people off iOS. With your example of the whatsapp being better on iOS I think what you want out of a phone and what some other people (me included) want is a bit different. I am seriously considering the iPhone 6 because most of my music now is bought from iTunes, but there are still things that is keeping me from doing it. Better is subjective, so evaluate your needs and wants when you get a phone.

Get a Nexus (or soon, a Silver). I must admit running vanilla Android is a smooth experience. Though with all the bloatware the S5 is smooth as ice.

The (hopefully) new Nexus should be coming out soonish yes, it will definitely be considered.

I wanted to go that route but the fates decided to put my last phone in an early grave (or perhaps a R1000 repair from a Chinese phone repair shop?). Either way, I went ahead with an S5 and Gear 2 to get in on the hype, after all I do earn a living by developing for these devices.

Sorry if I am a bit off-topic here, but am running 4.4.4 on a Tab 2, is as smooth as butter! :D

Just a question for all you Apple guys, does an iPhone support WiFi direct? The ability to send a file from one device to another at the speed of say 40MB/s
