yesterday I woke up with my eyes paining a bit, I realized that I cannot see objects that are in front of me, today the pain kinda continues.

So yeah, after being a carrot addict my entire life I thought that I could avoid eye problems (my entire family apart from me wears glasses). I guess the bad genes are just to strong for me so yeah basically I need to get some glasses I'll be seeing an optometrist as soon as I can get an appointment in the New Year.

The funny thing is that I read a lot of books and I thought that people who usually read a lot would end up being short sighted and not far sighted, does anyone know if this is normal?

How old are you ???
I had to start using reading glasses when i was 52

I'm short-sighted and started glasses in my mid-20's. It's the gene thing again :(

When you are older and you're eyes have stabilised have a look into LASIK although it is more suited for short sightedness.

You always struck me as older.

I got glasses about a year ago.

Best thing ever, being able to see again. I love them. :D

*edit*

I was in blurry denial for about ten years.

Well my family's eyes as I said is basically messed up, everyone grandad, father, mom brothers and sisters they all wear glasses but me. I always joked with them (because I'm addicted to carrots) about the quality of my eyes. Everyone in my family got their glasses at ages 14-16. So yeah I really thought I could avoid this by sticking to my healthy carrot habit.

Basically I'm the only left handed one and now I'm going to be the only far sighted person, they are all short-sighted. :D

My dad decided to get glasses "once his arms became to short to read". Well a bit after that actually.... For a while he would place the newspaper on the ground while sitting on a lounge chair & read the paper. Then that became too close & he finally got glasses.

This **** happens when you get older regardless of what "is in the family". If your eyes are *hurting* then I'd go to see an optom or maybe even go get your brain scanned. No jokes, but it can be a tumor.

I find that many educated people, and computer users (sometimes different categories :) ) tend to become near-sighted, as the eye has done many years of close straining, and the lens cannot "relax" and straighten to focus far. In combination with genes...

It does seem to go downhill pretty early.

At 17 I had razor sharp eyes. 25...pretty much average. Maybe its all this staring at screens business.

I don't think it is that extreme.

The Hurting Part is worrying though...

I have found when i don't sleep enough my eyes hurt and i lose some vision which is not even corrected by my glasses/contact lenses.

Stop scaring the guy, he just needs glasses! ;-)

No, I needed glasses before and my eyes didn't hurt or were strained. I just couldnt see far. So if your eyes are hurting and suddenly you can't see, then I'd say the possibility of a tumor is very real

I think my eyes are going bad... Can't see as far as I could (short sighted?).. Friends can read road signs before I can. I know me left eye is worse off, as it's more blurry than the right at a distance, only ever so slightly, but as I get older, it'll probably get worse...

The exact same thing with me, I went for an eye test to confirm it. You need to wear specs. And I'm not even 20 yet :(

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago, except my right eye was worse off. It indeed got worse until I ended up getting some stylish Oakley frames with corrective lenses. Everyone says it suits me nicely and can't imagine me without them anymore...

I'm at that point that I'm a hazard without my specs or contacts. Started using contacts from the age of 14. Bad eye sight is definitely to do with genes. Your lifestyle has a small effect in comparison. I am so short-sighted that I cannot even read on my screen without specs.
