I've been using my newly acquired ipad only for a few days now but thats long enough to understand just how much i underestimated the usefulness of this device. I always knew I sorta wanted one but couldn't figure out how, or even if, I could integrate it with my workflow.

Turns out it was really easy :). Apps like flipboard mean I finally understand the usefulness of twitter, ShutterSnitch let's me hand my iPad to a client so they can see the photos I'm taking while I'm taking them, and the bigger screen makes typing a snap compared to a touch screen phone.

It's a lot easier to dismiss the iPad if you haven't used one, but now I'm sold.

Anyone have some must have apps that they think I should check out?

Hey bwana,

I am interested in how you are managing the data costs, what bundles did you go for, will you use any other dongle or just straight 3g?

Thing is , I know I want one too...just trying to rationalise what I expect will be some hefty data costs.

I've had my first iPhone for about a month now. After having had an arrange of other phones and now the iPhone the iPad just makes sense. I often think that some extra real-estate would be just logical when using the iPhone. I really want an iPad. Maybe Santa will provide?! I do wonder how other the other tablets compare though price vs functionality ... must do some research. Sorry I didn't answer your must haves question.

Mine's wifi only but I can turn my phone into a wifi hotspot (in theory) so I'll probably keep signing up for 8ta bundles for now. :)

My mistake was thinking that the iPad was just an inflated iPhone but that extra screen real estate makes an even bigger difference than I thought it would.

get PVZ now, going to the toilet will never be the same!

Connect to your wifi, launch Safari, bookmark http://filmon.com and viola! you just turned your iPad into a nice little TV for free. If you have Apple TV hooked up to your TV, you can just launch Airplay and watch all those channels on your big screen

I am thinking that a Cell C 5GB bundle and a MiFi would be the perfect counterpart for a iPad.
More than enough data for even the most hardened surfer....
That could work :)

I've got the iPhone version but I'm not sure I'm interested enough in the game anymore to buy the HD one for the iPad. Cut the rope looks interesting though.

I must say that I also underestimated the iPad big time. I've imported 6 kind of Android "iPad" tablets in the last few months and the high end ones are really nice, but since I got my Apple iPad a week ago I couldn't imagine using any other tablet. Even though the Androids have HDMI out and USB ports and are quick, the Apple UI and touch screen is way superior.

The battery life is amazing! At least 10 hours :) Now my MBP can be spared an hour or 2 of use per day.

I got the 3G version but haven't gotten round to getting a micro sim yet. Pity Cell C's awesome offer won't work on the iPad.

@Bwana. Thanks for your honesty, and for coming clean. Not many people have the guts to admit they were wrong :D

iPad apps that I REALLY like...

1. Goodreader - and then figure out how to download the latest imported magazines, like MacFormat, MacWorld, MacLife, T3, Popular Mechanics etc...absolutely free and long before they get to CNA shelves

2. Motion X GPS (HD version)

3. BBC News

4. Clock Radio

5. Colorsplash - amazing !!

6. Lets Golf - unbelievable graphics when on the iPad display

7. Paper Toss HD (lots of fun)

8. Accuweather

9. Splashtop - view your PC on your iPad, wirelessly

10. Flipboard

11. Reckless Racing HD - I am not into gaming, but this is good

12. WebMD

13. Accuradio - amazing music app

14. Friendly

:) In my defence… on paper there shouldn't be any thing overly special about it so it was easy to dismiss it out of hand as being a toy. I've got a feeling my MBP is going to be getting a lot less use on a day to day basis than it used to.

Thanks for the app suggestions :)

Any hints tips or advice on the best way to buy an ipad in South Africa (CPT) ?

Exactly what I'm doing. Using my 5GB bundle to tether my laptop as a WiFi hotspot. If needed when I'm out the house I tether my iPhone as a hotspot. Am loving the iPad.

I want one.. What is the best route to take to get one of these if you're in SA?

Importing it by using mail forwarders is still the cheapest option, expect to pay around R4500 (everything included) for the cheapest WiFi only iPad

What software are you using on your iphone to create the hotspot?
