So I went to Capitec

*Cough* Discovery Bank

So I just read that the Jacob Zuma foundation is asking South Africans to help pay for his corruption court cases. Then I saw they have an account with Capitec Bank. I won't be contributing anything but now I am worried if my savings will be safe in my Capitec account. It's so close to an account of a man that has sold out South Africa.

Your savings should be at Tyme Bank...

You're limited to R100k at Tyme and some people like to keep lots of cash.

I took out an FNB account, but I'm thinking of going back to Capitec. It seems that international deposits work out cheaper with Capitec (R150 vs R195 from FNB).

Larger international purchases are also cheaper: If I purchase something from Amazon for R1000, Capitec will charge me R3, whereas FNB will charge me R27.50 (2.75%).

To top it off, FNB charge me R99 per month, while Capitec charges me R5 and gives me interest.

Hi,

One of the things preventing me from moving to Capitec (From FNB) is there is no dedicated forex with Capitec (I have a UK bank account and an offshore broker for US shares). Do you use a service such as Skrill to send forex payments?

Use any of the cheaper 3rd party places like exchange4free, clickfx etc. etc.

For those that might have missed it:

Has anyone successfully moved and registered their Capitec App from one Android phone a new phone without having to go into the bank? Was it an easy process?

You get a warning saying the app on the old phone will stop working and you just log in, easy peasy.

Also, to add: ensure your capitec registered sim/number is in the device you intend to install and register the banking application on.

During the initial sign in, the app will send an sms to your number. This sms needs to be received by the device you intend to install the app on.

"Capitec: We're experiencing connectivity problems on our app. ATMs, card & *120*3279# are working. We apologise for the inconvenience."

SMS received 15h45 but only looked at it now.

Do you need the sim in your device when using the app?

This morning I logged on to my laptop to do some banking on Capitec, and needed to add a new beneficiary.

On my cellphone a message popped up saying something to the tune of "Have anybody from Capitec phoned you to create a beneficiary?" with Yes and No as selection.

Choosing Yes aborts adding the beneficiary. Choosing No adds the beneficiary.

So, reading between the lines, it seemed as if somebody presented themselves as Capitec and phoned some Capitec clients instructing them to add beneficiaries... in order to commit fraud that way.

Or am I wrong?
