So I'm getting poached..

I earn way less than what I can if I decide to work in Cape Town CBD. Even admitted to my boss one day, yet I will not leave this company. The working conditions are worth more than the salary descripency.

I have a family and a career wife, my job gives us the freedom to allow me to leave home late and get home early, work from home when the kids are sick and take leave at a moments notice. My office is 4km away from home and I cycle to work each day. We have awesome unlimited coffee :) Were geek heaven and my boss is even paying for my UNISA studies.

Best of all is my kids see me in the morning when they wake up and get home early enough to spend some time with them outside as the sun is still shinning. I cannot put a price on this.

So I'm happy in my job, the fact I get paid is a bonus.

Where do you work? Any vacancies? :)

I'm also looking to change jobs. I'm very happy with the work environment and the company where I work, but I'm not doing what I want to do anymore.

You're still young. Take the money and leave....hahahahaha. If you stay there too long you wont be paid properly, and eventually it'll hit you on the financial side, as many new companies only want to hire you at a relatively small percentage increase from your current salary.

Unless you work for my company, in which case dont go, I dont want your work.

thats the ticket, as Confucius says, Find a job you love and you will never work a day of your life.

:) That sounds like an awesome office life you have there. At the moment I have something similar,
I guess me questioning whether to leave is going against that.

I also live really close to work at the moment, couple seconds down the road.. other job is like a 25 minute drive :wtf: Hmm, would have to factor that in for petrol/time/traffic. The added freedom is awesome, as long as you work your 40hrs/week its all good :)

I've always been a guy for the mellow lifestyle.. although a couple K extra/month would help on a new house. Solution: Get a hut. :D

skimread
You should be able to work out how much you earn for the company. Rough guide is you can ask for a third of what you earn as your salary per month. If you use no company resources it can be more.
If the salary that you want divided by 3 isn't a third or more of what the company brings in from your services then I doubt they would now or in future give the increase you want so I would start making plans to change jobs.

My hour rate I earn for the company is quite high compared to what I get paid, i.e. greater than 3 times my hour rate. Another factor. Just holding thumbs for some bonuses to make it all good.

I think I will use the other offer as a bargaining chip to say that I am staying loyal etc, and I want to be rewarded for it. Uhm, still sounds like blackmail :/

It looks like you are going to have to continue getting offers just so you can get a raise. How about you ask them for a raise without talking about the other offer?
Let the reason be that you are underpaid and not the fact that someone is willing to pay you more.
Counter offers are only for the blackmailing type with zero integrity.

Money can make you happy and if it doesn't, I'd rather be unhappy in a ferarri than a mini;)

Also, counter offers do not work for me either. If they thought you were worth more then they should have been paying you that all along. I have turned down 2 counters in my career so far for that very reason.

@Uraeus: If your married with kids or planning on starting a family, then my work enviroment is perfect. Actually would not recommend it if you where not.

But if your young, single and no intention of creating spawn points - then life is too short not to take risks. In my day I took a lot of them, had loads of fun, made money, lost money and no regrets.

In Joburg 25 minutes is considered close.

I wish i could get poached... :/

25min commute is NOTHING. I do an hour each way and it's still not much compared to what I've done in the past.

Just another +1 for skipping the counter offer thing. Also no-one is indispensable.
Weigh up the two jobs based on your current salary etc and the offered salary, decide, and go from there. If you're concerned about working environment etc then you probably need to ask more questions of the prospective employer.

Well if lack of money is the cause of your unhappiness, money can make you happy.

Please explain how.

I enables you to do all the things you ever wanted, you don't have to answer to a boss, you can go to every single GP in a race calendar. You can drive a nice car, spoil your wife, go on lots of holidays, give your kids the best education, help the poor, help the SPCA, donate lots of money to cancer research...

Where do I stop???

They who think it doesn't bring happines are blind.
