Just saw my line syncing at 18mb on my adsl2+ router. Phone telkom and the lady said I can get only 20mb/s. Is she talking rubbish or is there certain exchanges that runs only on 20 and not 40.

Ok, so checking this site:
http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php
If I enter the value of 3.0dB for downstream attenuation, and it says my approximate distance is 217m. This is in line with the distance I measure on Google Earth to the green box. It also says that my max VDSL speed should be around 88087kbps... so 40Mbps should surely be capable?
I would be totally ok with what I was hearing if the Telkom guys didn't walk right up to us and tell us that they had just upgraded our street and that we should be VDSL capable.
Wonder if there is anything in these stats.
Congrats getting VDSLEnjoy the speed.
I'd just like to point out that AfriHost's Line stats tool has a bug (or Telkom's API has the bug....). It switches the downstream and upstream SNR+Attenuation values around. So your downstream attenuation is 9dB, not 3dB.
The downstream attenuation will always be higher than upstream. Always.
Enjoy.
Ah, thanks for that. Should still be getting full speed though. At the moment the router isn't even connecting. I'm on cellular backup. Waiting for them to finish whatever it is that they are doing.
How long does this take?

I needed to verify my ADSL line again. You might need to as well, if the line sync'd and accounts dial up but no access then you need to verify it![]()
No, with Telkom still. Thanks for the heads up.
Do I do that with Afrihost?
No, with Telkom still.
Use the Telkom guest account, goto the Telkom website and look for the verify ADSL page. Type in your landline number and order number, then it should verify.
Alternatively call 10210 and ask them to verify it for you.

So the line does not want to sync?Yeah it's probably not that then. I can't even load the telkom page and the router doesn't seem to be syncing.
So the line does not want to sync?
Is the VDSL and ADSL 2+ profiles ticked to make sure the router can sync on both (never know which Telkom may put you on)?
I never had downtime like you're experiencing.
Yeah, it's set to ADSL / VDSL. After it jumped to 15Mbps ADSL this morning, all we had to do was reboot for it to switch to VDSL.
It seems to cycle between trying to sync, syncing at 40Mbps / 3Mbps with 0's for all the stats (attenuation etc), and then trying to sync again.
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 11.3 9.0
Attenuation (dB): 29.5 17.0
Output Power (dBm): 17.0 12.9
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 16940 1120
Rate (Kbps): 10239 1023
Are these stats any good for 20MB well atleast 15MB in my case (ADSL2+)
I don't think you should go higher than 10mb. If you raise your speed, you're going to lower your SNR, and going lower than 11 is just going to result in intermittent connectivity.
