So is my line really VDSL capable?

I'm not sure our neighbourhood is VDSL/ADSL2+ - but it's 20mbit,

What is the average real world speed on it? My neighbour is getting 13mbit real world which I thought was really low?

What's your distance and line quality? I think VDSL has less overheads, but not sure. I see many on these forums get 18.95 down on 20mbps.

With a speedtest on my 20Mbit VDSL I get over 19Mbit down and achieved 2.0Mbit upload.

If that is the Max then it is ADSL2+ and the reason for not getting full 'speed' could be distance, condition of cable, modem issues, setup issues or a combination of these.

as i checked on telkom page in my area they mention copper so is not yet vdsl capable.

MAX speed in your area: 10Mbps (copper)

VDSL is still copper. It is just a different exchange. I think rule of thumb is <1k. For 40mbit and <1.6ish for 20mbit.

You might still be able to get 20Mbps ADSL2+ which is about the same just maybe a meg or two slower on download speed due to overheads and a 1Mbps upload compared to the 2.5Mbps of VDSL I think.

20Mbit VDSL has 2Mbit upload.
40Mbit VDSL has 3Mbit upload.

:D

So after a long time without any connectivity, dropped connections etc, the Telkom tech comes out yesterday. His router seems a lot more stable than ours (Same model - Telkom Pacer). I swap ours out last night and this morning we're at full VDSL speeds. It seems to average between 30Mbps and 37Mbps if I do repetitive speed tests.

Finally.
