Found your issue! Move from the MTN backbone, that would be the first step to resolve issues.

Are you sure? I've tried probably all of the ISP's out there and MTN thus far been the only one keeping up with capacity demands. I have a direct account with MTN and never had problems since 2010.

I believe this forum needs a sticky for info such as this. In addition, do not just accept 'too far from the exchange". On Tuesday I was too far, 2 days later I'm on full VDSL and my house hasn't moved :)

Im syncing at 30mbits atm, they say I'm too far from exchange to get 40mbits. Traced Telkom cable to MSAN and I am 770 m away, approximately same distance as you.

My attenuation is 27 db and SNR 5.5, they refusing to come and inspect my line. TelkomZA says they ran checks from their side and it appears my line has no faults. What else can I do?

Sidenote: went from 10mb which is what they said is my max supported line speed on exchange to 20mb adsl2+ to vdsl (which they said is not possible) and now on 30mb. (3 weeks of effort).

Is there a way I can get them to check my line physically?

With your stats it should be able to handle 40meg. But 30 meg is plenty bud. More than what most people can get.

I agree its plenty, I'm paying for 40mb rental and would like to be able to achieve those speeds if possible. It seems possible but it requires a little effort from Telkom, which seems like I am requesting them to go over and beyond. This is my neighbours line stats, he is next to me and one distance further from exchange.

Granted he is on lower speed so his SNR should be higher. But my attenuation shouldn't be double his?
He is busy with upgrade to 20mb VDSL, I think that will give indication whether or not there are issues on my side.

If you are paying for 40meg you should insist on it. Use the telkom chat on monday. If they cant help you rather downgrade to 20meg.

So I tried switching off the circuit breaker that my study's plugs connected to and running the extension cord from the other side of the house. No difference :(

Now I wonder if there's anything I can do to improve my noise margin. On the previous Wednesday, when we were all moved over to our MSAN, a bunch of guys' phone/DSL lines in our area went dead. Reported it. Eventually a week and a day late, after much hassle and getting our area manager involved (Who was extremely friendly and helpful), my line was back up. I'm pretty sure that I was the first one to be reconnected.

When I checked my line stats at +-3PM my noise margin was over 20dB (22dB IIRC) but later in the evening (when I posted my stats on this thread) my noise margin was hovering around 12-13dB. I thought to myself that it was probably normal and that it was just some random interference. Now, 3 days later, there's 0% improvement. Did the techie perhaps do something?

But if it aint' broken then I shouldn't fix it? Could this make the difference between me having stable VDSL (20 or 40) or not?

My line went dead at that time. Logged a call on Thursday. Came back, died, came back, died, etc etc. Logged another call Sunday morning since they decided to close the previous one. Sunday eve the techie phoned me, said the cutover was complete, tested my line and sounded happier that I did :) Prior to the cut my SNR was around 30/27, Att around 6/1. After the cut my SNR was around 17 ds and my Att around 14 ds. Right now SNR is 10 ds and 28 up. Att not being reported, but I was told that it's around 7. I say don't let your stats bother you, do the upgrade and then see what you get get out of that line

Update:
I went to my neighbour to test out my modem on his line

My neighbour is 70m closer to the exchange however our line stats are way apart. Telkom logged fault and said they will send someone out to inspect it.

Amazing what you have to go through in order to get service from this company.
