Software piracy costs over 50 billion dollars a year

Rubbish.. it doesn't cost tech companies anywhere near this..

Counting a pirated copy of software as a lost sale is just not accurate, I would guess alot of people who use pirated software wouldn't do so if they had to pay the retail price for it...

I agree.

As for counting pirated copies as lost sales, well, maybe one way to look at it is to say that the people that pirated the product would not necessarily buy it at all. How many of us have apps lying around that sounded good but we just never got around to using them. Also, if I can't (for some reason) get hold of a pirate copy of Office, I sure as HELL aint laying out my money for the real thing, I'll happily use Open Office. May as well start shouting that OSS is also costing the nice people at BSA X billion trillion in lost revenue!

I have a problem with companies (and individuals) pirating for commercial gain. There is no two ways about that.
 
Without doing the research, it looks like the top pirates are also very poor countries. Would you pay a month + worth of salary for a software package, while in the USA it may be considered maybe 1/10th of your monthly salary? (thumb suck values obviously), but still shows that software is very expensive to poorer countries. I know there is the open source route you can take... another debate can follow off this. The point, if you would like to market yourself as an secretary for example, then knowing MS office will most likely be of more benefit than being an expert in open office...thus ppl install a pirated version of MS office rather than a free version of open office - my logic might be completely wrong, but that is my understanding :)
 
I would say it does cost them money, no doubt about it. Some software people cannot do without. So while not every pirate is a lost sale i think it may apply more to applications than music and dvd's.

Again though charging 16k for photoshop and all the other goodies is not exactly making people want to hand over their money, paying 4k for corel x5 with a couple added features? Niggah please. I bought corel 9 for 4k if the upgrades were 600 or 700 bucks i would buy each one but 3-4k for minor updates i think not.

They get to that figure because some software costs a bloody fortune. Don't moan about people ripping off your product when you are trying to rip people who buy it legit :D.

Besides you can be damn sure software would cost more if it was not for us pirates who keep prices lower :D
 
How about some articles on what the CSS world is doing to intellectual property rights, freedoms and innovation? Probably way more than the "loss" these behemoth monopolies "endure".

Oh - and to those of you who DO pirate M$ products, I will happily hand you over to the BSA. If you do not want to spend money on software, do the right thing and support OSS.
 
What a load of bull****, these "Expert" idiots come to the conclusion that if some one has pirated software they would have purchased it if they could not pirate it? that kind of conclusion is fundamentally flawed, a child could even come to the correct conclusion.

How stupid can you be ?
 
is this only "counterfeit" software, as in copied and sold as the original?
 
Even if I couldn't pirate a movie, I probably wouldn't buy it anyway. So that sum is hugely inaccurate

Specifically, according to the GAO: "Three widely cited U.S. government estimates of economic losses resulting from counterfeiting cannot be substantiated due to the absence of underlying studies." It's worth citing the GAO's comments on those three studies in full...Simply put, the GAO's fair and balanced investigation into these claims of damages discovered that they were - not to put too fine a point on it - indefensible.
