I received my huawei e220 (Vodafone) 3 days ago and was told by many that this little modem was real easy to set up on Win XP. Not for me is not. I connect the modem via provided usb cable to my pc and nothing happens. I cant open win explorer, I think its trying to initialise/access the data on the devise at this time. My pc then hangs until I disconnect the device at which point every thing is back to normal speed and operation (not the modem:). Tried the same on 2 other pc's with the same result. So I took it back to the shop I bought it from, they tested it on their notebook (had the software installed already) and they could connect no problem - Grrr. I was advised to bring my pc in so they can test it on my pc (will be really painful exercise). Is there something I am missing here or do i have a faulty device? Any advice will be much appreciated.

That's why the autodetect / autorun technology on Windows is called PnP; Plug and Pray....;)

Sounds to me like a potential USB problem on your system. Check if you have:

1) The latest BIOS for your system
2) Latest drivers
3) SP2 on XP

Also check that you don't have drive letters mapped in the range the modem might want to create a memory disk. Might stop the autorun from starting.

If he's having the same problem on 3 different PC's and it works on a PC with the software already installed might it not be a problem with the modem's flash memory?

Yup - I have in fact tested it on 2 other pc's with no luck and same result which to me points to a faulty device BUT howe come it worked in the store when they tested it for me? Could it be that it was because they had the software already installed? PS I Have latest drivers and SP2 etc installed...

Syndyre might be onto something, if you don't have another drive mapped into the place of the flash disk, it might be faulty.

Where are you based? I suspect Cpt?

If so, I might be able to lend you a E220 to test with.

Indeed I live in Cape Town (Table View). I will be very gratefull if I could test this problem with another E220... :) Packing my pc up to take to Canal Walk would realy be my last resort. (If no one has experienced my problem though - then surely the device must be faulty?)

Maybe try downloading the VMC software off the website and try installing that before you plug it in again, not sure if it'd work or not but might be worth a try.

Will give that a try thanks Syndyre. I'm not sure if I like having to "get creative" to make a device work that should have worked in the first place. Only got this modem the on Saturday... Oh well - got to love IT :) I'll give a last shot, otherwise I will have to go back to the store I suppose

Thanx ic. Downloading it now and will test it. For interest sake: I took the E220 to the office, plugged it into 3 more pc's. Two had same problem (cant access the device) and one had no problem! Installed and connected 100%. Driving me crazy...

That suggests a USB issue of some sort - I doubt that it's the E220, I assume you have been checking for problems [device|resource conflicts] in the Windoze Device Manager?

As a rule of thumb for PCs, it's always best to start at the bottom and work upwards, in the case of PCs the bottom is BIOS - if there is a newer BIOS version for the mainboard in a PC, then try applying that, then move on upwards to the operating system, and in the case of Windoze, when using Windoze Update, sometimes WU decides to install device drivers that are incompatible with the actual hardware - in the past I've often had problems after accepting an """updated""" device driver install from WU - I've burnt my fingers & learnt my lessons there - just one of the many reasons I primarily use Linux...

Hmm - downloaded and tried the vodafone/vodacom software (VMC v9.1) and the software from huawei. No luck here - closest I get is "No wireless device detected". 'Hmmm... should i connect e220 to short usb cable, hold it by USB end and... dip it in my coffee?' :)

LOL, no that would definitely void the warranty on the E220, have you been in touch with v3g to get a loan E220 to try out?

If you have a spare HDD, maybe you should try taking the existing heXPee HDDs out, and just see if a fresh XP [+SP2] install works on the same hardware - process of elimination...

I've had two problems with these modems:

1: They do not like certain USB chips! Sadly for the life of me I can't recall which ones!

2: Someone had forced their CD Writer to use the same drive letter that the modems CD ROM emulation wanted to use.

As a rule the modem wants to be one letter up on your last CD/DVD device.

Tonight I am now going to install a USB PCI card in my pc and try and get the modem working this way. Hopefully I will have some success
