Some questions on Vodacom rates

Hi

I'm visiting SA for about 5 weeks and am trying to find a good SIM/prepaid plan for the trip.
I'll be travelling in the main cities and the Kruger Park and I guess I'll need around 100 min of talk time and 500MB of data.

Tossing up between Cell C & Vodacom. On Vodacom I could choose the "All Day Per Second" prepaid for voice and then buy a data bundle separately. But can someone clarify couple of things for me:
Vodacom offers three data bundles which all seem to be available on prepaid:
  • Broadband Standard Contract (MyMeg 500: 500MB for R149)
  • Broadband Standard Prepaid (MyMeg 500: 500MB for R159)
  • Broadband Advanced (MyMeg 500: 500MB for R185)
What's the difference?

Cell-C offers 500MB for R75, valid for 30 days (which means I'll have to recharge during my stay there).
But I can't believe that Cell-C would offer data at half the price of Vodacom. What am I missing?

Cell-C charges in 5kB increments but in what increments does Vodacom charge?

How long are Vodacom's data bundles valid for?

vodacom prepaid bundles expire on the last day of the next calender month.

vodacom is just greedy for money to pay share holders nice dividends, thats why they charge double.
 
You may want to check coverage at Kruger for Cell C. They are generally way cheaper but Vodacom has better coverage...

In answer to your questions:
1) Go with Vodacom even though they are more expensive as they will have stable and consistent coverage in the areas you need to go to
2) Data valid till last day of the next calendar month
 
I think everyone is forgetting that CellC signed a roaming contract with Vodacom to use Vodacom's 3G network. So I suggest op to go with CellC.

not true at all... CellC sim cards falls back onto Vodacom where CellC has no coverage, meaning CellC has a much bigger coverage footprint than Vodacom

How do you know? Yesterday I had a meeting on floor -1 (basement). I could never get signal there and always had to go to ground floor to check mails, etc. Yesterday my hone showed "Vodacom" instead of "CellC" and it was connected...

Isn't MyBroadband a fantastic mine of information! :)

Thanks for the help guys. I didn't know about Cell C's roaming agreement.
I'll need it from 29 Nov - 4 Jan, so the Vodacom data would expire at the end of Dec and I'd have to buy another bundle anyway.

Looks like Cell C is a good choice then. And then I don't have to worry about Vodacom's Broadband 1, 2 or 3 :)

Sorry I had a brain fail and got confused. They're definately roaming on Vodacom 3G. my bad

Just to clear a few things up.

If there is a Cell C signal but it's poor, you are able to roam onto Vodacom if there's a good signal, But only on voice.

If there's a poor Cell C signal, you won't get a to roam on Vodacom for data.

Roaming on Vodacom data (edge) only works if there's no Cell C towers around.

Personally I haven't heard anyone on Cell C roaming on Vodacom 3G yet.

Check coverage. the good thing about them is you can get 100MB for cheap and if that's not enough, just get more airtime and get more bandwith. So even if it doesn't fully work, you didn't waste much money, and if there's not 3G coverage you might still get to roam on Vodacom Edge.

But it wouldn't hurt to get get a Vodacom Sim just in case.

Although take into mind those constracts are 24 months, we also have something called Out of Bundle rates which can be compared to getting eaten by a shark.

Vodacom prepaid is expensive as hell, unless you get the big 24 or 12 Gig promotions, although still kinda expensive...
But Vodacom prepaid does last until the end of the following month, so you can get away with buying one 500Meg-1Gig bundle if you time it right. I use to buy a bundle for use over 2 months to save money.

It would probably do me good to go cold-turkey without internet for a day or two if I'm somewhere without 3G coverage ;)
