SONA 2018 has been postponed

Yes. It keeps those in power on their toes and actually having to perform somewhat or else they will get voted out. What most politicians fear the most is losing power.

No, you end up with a two party state, and that's ****.

Oh get off it.

Give credit where credit is due.

That was a world class speech and sure every statement wasn't necessarily agreeable, but if you can't acknowledge it for what is it then you are simply acknowledging that no matter what he does or says it will never be good enough for you.

It reflects more on you than it does on him.

For the first time in decades there is a glimmer of hope and some real potential but people will still shoot it down.

It's ****ing sad, that's what it is.

And dare I say it, it's almost always coming from the white camp.
I didn't want to say it directly.

The issue for some is that just because he's ANC, he's schit by default. Only the DA can be our saviours.

People need to get off it. Ramaphosa is one of the best we have.

The problem is our electoral system which desperately needs reform. The PR system just doesn't work.

If we had to vote directly for a president tomorrow, I would honestly vote Ramaphosa. But because of our electoral system, I don't want to vote ANC. This leaves me feeling conflicted because it effectively forces me into voting for another party, despite the fact that their leaders don't really inspire my confidence in them...

I really enjoyed SONA tonight. I find myself optimistic and impressed with our president.

While there are many aspects that need to be fix esp fraud & corruption related, he did seemed to say the right thing.

While we finally have a decent president (I don’t think we ever had a good post 94.. Mandela was a great inspirational leader.. but lacked on management.. CR I think is the most skilled for this) who is well spoken and versed, I am hoping this will lead to a ‘golden era’ in SA for the next few years. SA hasn’t really had this yet.. and it could be way way better than the 94-2007 era.

I might not agree with some of their policies, SA has a new outlook and maybe this is our turn at having a stable, boring but reliable government for a change.

I won’t vote for the anc.. but as a president we finally have one which I am happy to say is ours.. (well for now.. let’s hope he is as good as he speaks)

Our standards are not very high,
when the benchmark is someone with std 4, 700 corruption charges, and numeral illiteracy,
anyone who can speak English will do.

So now it means the ANC will want EFF to vote with them to change the constitution so land can be expropriated without compensation. I don't see Malema voting with the ANC, in their terms especially and while ANC is in power. So, therefore, I don't think expropriation of land without compensation will be realized. Remember, they have about 14 months to do this.

Next year, I think the ANC might go below 50%. Remains to be seen.

So you like it 50:50?

No, you end up with a two party state, and that's ****.

Better than a one-party state, not so?

Thanks God it's not just someone who can speak English this time, we got more than we bargained for.

Not quite. The issue is that not matter who you stick on top of a pile of corruption it's still a pile of corruption.

Perhaps he'll lead a charge to change that - certainly possible - but I'd say the odds are stacked against him. Still now there is a chance at least.

**** me. There are just no pleasing some people.

I was impressed by the speech. Sure the land issue is a sensitive one. But it needs to be dealt with.

As others mentioned. Would never vote ANC - purely because we need a strong opposition. If our system allowed us to vote for the president; Cyril would get my vote.

I want to know how he plans to take land from people without compensation without causing problems. How will he decide who to take land from? Sure, if theres cases where people own land that they legitimately stole, or obtained in some other dodgy way and it can be proven, fine. Take the land away. But if word gets out about taking land from someone who spent the last 30 years of his life paying off the bond through blood, sweat and tears, then **** will hit the fan and investors will bail. I need clarity on this man's intentions.

This was the section on land redistribution:

"We will accelerate our land redistribution programme not only to redress a grave historical injustice, but also to bring more producers into the agricultural sector and to make more land available for cultivation.

We will pursue a comprehensive approach that makes effective use of all the mechanisms at our disposal.

Guided by the resolutions of the 54th National Conference of the governing party, this approach will include the expropriation of land without compensation.

We are determined that expropriation without compensation should be implemented in a way that increases agricultural production, improves food security and ensure that the land is returned to those from whom it was taken under colonialism and apartheid.

Government will undertake a process of consultation to determine the modalities of the implementation of this resolution.

We make a special call to financial institutions to be our partners in mobilising resources to accelerate the land redistribution programme as increased investment will be needed in this sector."

There were actually a lot of very subtle qualifications and riders to this. Reading between the lines, he seems to be signalling that they will try to find an approach that won't cause economic armageddon and the part about requiring financial institutions to invest in agriculture is intriguing.

It almost seems like he had to include the expropriation without compensation line to appease the radicals, but wants to pursue policies that avoid getting to that point.

Apart from this, he said all the right things with some concrete measures. Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it is not the first time we have heard wonderful promises that amount to nothing. Bear in mind that in the past the main reason why most of these initiatives amounted to nothing is that absolute oxygen thieves have been appointed to the ministries that were supposed to implement them and there has been zero accountability.

If all he does is appoint competent cabinet ministers and other office holders to the SOEs as well as organisations like SAPS and the NPA, and then holds them to account, he will have won half the battle.

Hell no, PR is way better than FPTP, which leads to massive polarisation and gridlock like in the US.

The only change I'd make is to make it a mixed-member proportional system, like New Zealand uses.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed-member_proportional_representation

Then at least some MPs are accountable directly to the people that elected them, not the parties.

The DA actually has a proposal for this that makes sense.

https://www.da.org.za/2013/03/da-electoral-reform-bill-will-make-mps-accountable-to-the-people/

They also previously suggested a system where the President, Premiers and Mayors are elected directly.
