Cyril said all the right things, cannot compare to Zuma.

Free education, NHI etc - budget speech later in the month will be very interesting - where will money come from to fund these initiatives?
Guy that used to work in Treasury said that if we tighten up procurement(don't pay R15 for a R1 HB pencil), significant money could be saved - we live in intersting times.

Can say what we want, but we dodged a bullet when NDZ and her ilk were voted out in DEC2017.

It's an insanely slippery slope on the edge of a cliff though. No matter how you spin "expropriation without compensation", the millisecond someone's property is seized against their will all those companies and investors Cyril talked about so much last night will take note.

When property rights aren't respected investors stay away, you can't have a flourishing economy long term without property rights, even communist China figured this much out eventually ...

People need to get off it. Ramaphosa is one of the best we have.

The problem is our electoral system which desperately needs reform. The PR system just doesn't work.

If we had to vote directly for a president tomorrow, I would honestly vote Ramaphosa. But because of our electoral system, I don't want to vote ANC. This leaves me feeling conflicted because it effectively forces me into voting for another party, despite the fact that their leaders don't really inspire my confidence in them...

The man has hardly had a week in the seat and alreasy he is *** because other people ****ed us over previously.

Even the ANC can run this country just fine if they right their ship. We don't need to have the DA take over we just need them there to retain a balance.

Let's see what happens with the land thing. He could possibly mean the tons of land lying dormant that the government controls. It could also refer to abandoned/inactive farms. A little red flag went up in my brain but this one issue has been hanging over us since 1994, so it wasn't totally unexpected.

Well said - I could live with the ANC in power if they did all that was mentioned in SONA. I may even vote for them one day if they did it and kept it up.

Nah, it is just townhouses & houses in suburbs that will be taken, moenie bekommerd wees nie, land is safe.

No it won't - farms don't do well in built up areas. He was talking about agriculture - not living. Sometimes headings are important (we hope)

The land issue is much more than agriculture, some of our people want land to build their homes on and reside with their families, not for farming.

The opposition leader said Ramaphosa had promised no major policy reform‚ instead only tinkering with current policies that had not brought change to the lives of South Africans. “There were too many conferences and summits announced‚ and not enough clear plans for fixing the problems‚” he said.

First look at land owned by all organs of State within urban areas. Then move to the next level. And this is how I understand CR's speech last night as well...

Oh, Mmusi... hush. We listened to the same address as you did, and it very much wasn't the 'same old, same old'. He seems to be caught in an inescapable spiral of opposing for the sake of opposition, and it is exceedingly unbecoming.

However grand Cyril's plans may be, he has to tread carefully. He has to operate within the milieu of a party brought to its knees by his forebear, with the wounds of cronyism, corruption and self-enrichment still not even scabbed over. If he were to take an absolute kamikaze approach it'd all come tumbling down, and that would be an awful state of affairs for all of us. It's clear that Cyril prefers moving behind the scenes, yet we've seen the downfall of Zuma and the Guptas become fugitives in merely a week. The facial expressions of certain Zwanes, Muthambis, Browns and Van Rooyens told their own stories last night. By all means criticise and oppose where warranted, but grant the man some space to work. Continue down the track you're on, and you risk alienating at least some of the support base you've also worked hard at building.

I like Maimane, I really do. But in the hypothetical scenario of President Ramaphosa saying something totally new (like maybe build RDP houses on Mars by expropriating land with help of Elon musk), he would have cribbed as well.
 
I wish there was a new party (yes, I know).. Thuli Madonsela, Pravin Gordhan, possibly Ramaphosa (we will see soon) etc...
For me at the moment, there is no-one I would like to vote for. Now it is just voting for the least corrupt and hope....

Property is being seized against the will of individuals, companies and investors on a daily basis in SA, Europe, the US. To build roads, highways, airports...

The without compensation part is the new thing here.

As an investor, i don’t work on property rights but on concessions (as do the mines, the farms can do it, infrastructure has done it for ages), hence why investors work in Mozambique or China for example.

This point is moot for investors since investors like my company already work heavily in countries without any property right.

The second part everybody forgot here is that he has always put a big IF it can be done in a sustainable way.

Thirdly, I’m pretty sure it won’t fly through constitutional review except if there are very good reasons behind it (the property being stolen in 1913 or before and still belonging to the same family for example while expropriating without compensation a property purchased lawfully in 2001 wouldn’t make any sense).
