Sonic Wireless

maybe they only allow traffic on port 53 to their DNS servers as a security measure..

^^this^^

I've been experiencing erratic speeds since day one (2 weeks ago), no one seems to be able to solve the problem. Typical contract-based ISP I'm afraid...

Everything seems okay my side again...too little, too tale as I've already applied for fixed line *shudder*

You're still better off going with fixed line. I was "guaranteed" fixed speeds, with no influence by weather. I'm logging tickets daily because my speeds are nowhere near what I'm paying for.

I'm pretty much stuck with using a WISP at this point if I want more than 100GB of data and Sonic Wireless was one of my top picks for a provider.

Early feedback was quite good, but it seems recently people have been having poor a experience with them?
I'm going to be applying around this week, so ideas? I'm in Brackenfell, Protea Heights.

Not sure about their coverage on that side, maybe someone from there can comment. As far as problems go: even with the shoddy speeds last month I was able to do +- 146GB. So take that as you want, my problems have never been speed related though and rather some sort of routing issue they had.

Do you run smokeping?

I've had some annoying latency step ups that really messes with playing online.

Would be interesting to compare.

Very sad indeed.. Similar to my high praise of Afrihost a couple years back, my praise for Sonic Wireless was boundless...
Sadly, I do no longer recommend them as an ISP, as they have dropped the ball too many times.

Plus, why do I need to let them know when they are experiencing issues?

Wow very dissappointed to see all the negatives about sonic wireless....

I just came on here today to praise them, I have been with them a couple of months, and so far so good! this is the best internet experience I have ever had. When I have a issue with speed dropping I send them an e-mail and then within 10min my speed is fixed.

But that is the issue.. Too many calls logged.

I was with Sonic a few years back. I had a clear LOS to the tower but for some reason it just kept on dropping, packet loss, endless issues.

I'll tell you one thing...

The main guy, James, really goes out of his way to help. Dude was at my place about 4 times after the techies were here countless times. I even had the guy on BBM and he would help me at like 11pm the evening until my issues were fixed.

I left them because for some reason I live in a black hole where wireless just doesn't want to work.

But James really does go out of his way to help. I think the issue is that they don't have enough staff to handle the workload. It's the most "honest & upfront" ISP I've ever been with. Such a pity my stupid location is the problem.

have these guys closed shop? no one is responding to anything....

Since my last mail my connection has been better then ever around 2mins downtime the last month
