Sonic Wireless

Shoulda knocked on wood lol. Please ignore the above. I thought there was an active rep on here, that could potentially escalate support calls when the standard channels ignore you for days. I was mistaken.

Unsure why the reps are so slow with you guys...i got my stuff setup pretty fast and got replies under 24 hours..

If you want a quicker response please mail [email protected] he helped me setup my connection and got the ball rolling

They are in actual fact very busy according to Adriaan who called me yesterday.

They will answer. Just give them time

Hi all,

I'm gatvol with ADSL and my current ISP blowing hot air up my you know what.

I've seen all the raving about Sonic Wireless and while I'm impressed and will consider their offering, I signed up with my current ISP following a similar pattern. As the saying goes, fool me once....

Here's what the family uses and needs:

1. Lots of streaming (Netflix, Hulu, Sky, etc. ) everyday, any time of the day (we don't watch TV outside of business hours only);
2. The occasional, rare P2P/HTTP download - less than 20Gb per month;
3. A stable connection at 4mb minimum and;
4. The on going use of Unotelly.

I've looked at the prices on Sonic's site and I'll probably opt for the 5mb package. I'd like to know, based on your experience, how you've experienced the service (value for money, speeds, uptime, etc.), has their pricing changed in line with reductions in wholesale costs (if applicable), etc.

I know I'm asking for a lot but at the moment, I'm disappointed and the moerin with my ISP and want to leave them asap.

Thanks for the info guys!

In my opinion, SW is way above par in service delivery. I have worked with (VERY) few companies that deliver such service to their customers, Amanda, Adriaan and the Customer Support team are exceptional.

Pricing is obviously I little higher than (say) an ADSL provider. However, when you factor in the forced telephone line rental, you are actually paying about the same. Maybe a little bit more. They claim a contention ratio of around 20:1, when that is actually just worst-case scenario. My ratio is closer to the 5:1 region..

Now for Uptime.. I am the exception in this case, as I have had quite a few connectivity issues recently. Others, however, have claimed uptime greater than 99%. So, again, i guess im the exception.

The only annoyance i have is that they keep blaming my router for the issues, when my router perfectly routes to the Radio on the roof, and I connect directly to the radio with my laptop and experience the same issues.

Other than the last section, i am very happy with SW.

was anyone supplied with their logins to the router? the defaults don't seem to work and the tech who installed mine didn't tell me what they were

edit: also, internet has been slow for 2 days...anyone else?

Nope, they refused to give it to me.. Ya, also tried the ubnt logins..

I have been either slow or completely unreachable for the last few days. Apparently an issue at their DC.

Wonder why? I mean I paid for the router after all

I think over time they might learn to trust us.. But they had a valid point in that some of their "non-IT-savvy" customers muck about on the routers, totally destroy the config rendering the router unreachable remotely, then SW has to drive out to re-config it.. I don't like it, but it made sense.

Thanks Wills...

Hi

I had a site survey today, does anyone know how long it will take before I hear back, they mentioned something about tracking the distance via google earth....??

I am fed up with telkom and cannot wait to go the wireless route.

who else do you recommend?? I'd rather pay a bit extra then to be stuck with useless telkom.

I've also had them complete the site survey, agreed that they're more expensive than the rest but the reviews regarding reliability and uptime has been good. You can also try SA Wireless, they're cheaper but have a bad rep... Not sure how things are like now.
