Sonic Wireless

Im using their 5mb uncapped package in Kuilsriver. It works perfectly fine for 720p Netflix streaming. Torrenting and newsgroup downloads used to be fine but has been extremely slow the past few weeks.

I have been told that the FUP is around 250-300 gigs.
As for the streaming if I open up YouTube and there is a 1080p stream it usually jumps straight to it.

Like I said, so far its great. I cant complain.

I must be lucky with the Newsgroups...
Just ran one to test.

Everything sounds great, I'm just interested to know how well the network deals with gaming. Packet loss etc. Currently in Stellenbosch and the packet loss + congestion is terrible. Telkom have actually told me that they are aware of the congestion and packet loss problems at my exchange, but they have no ETA on when it will be fixed, or if it even will be.

So if anyone uses them for games, World of Warcraft, Dota, League of Legends etc...

Gaming for me is great.
BF4 I usually have the lowest ping. Dota is also great. I have had one or two games where there is a bit of packet loss but if I lag then usually everyone else does too.

Right so for gaming this connection is quite good

39-42ms CS:GO JHB
5-20ms CS:GO CPT
195-205ms Smite EU
250-310ms Smite US
270-320ms Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn NA/EU Servers
190-220ms EvE Online
220ms Entropia Universe
3-5ms Battlefield 4 (CPT)
25-50ms Battlefield 4 (JHB)

Those are the games i have tested so far.

Also very happy, had a few micro disconnects but no major downtimes if i was down was for 30 seconds max but still getting FULL 10MBps @ 280GB used in 7 days

Whats the installation costs like?

I see R1999 if on 12 month contract, but does that include the router etc?

Been with Sonic Wireless almost a full month now..so far 0.08% downtime. No throttling. No shaping after hours (5pm) shaping from 8am though on P2P only but sometimes bursts to my line speed when little traffic is being done on the Fibre line.

Current Usage - Month to Date 431.23GB
Signal Strength:
-58 dBm
Chain 0 / Chain 1: -59 / -60 dBm
Noise Floor: -104 dBm
Transmit CCQ: 94%

Self Installed i am around 1.8KM from the tower with a Powerbeam 25dbi on a 2m pole.

If anyone wants any specfic tests done please drop me a PM. these guys deserve your interest as they live up to what they promised. My FuP is 250GB but i was upfront when i applied and said i plan to do 800GB-2TB per month...was told it was fine as long as i do not affect other clients on my sector so keeping my heavy usage for after hours or when my sector is under light load..that is almost always the case. ping to BBC.co.uk is around 149ms-172ms.

Never been so happy with an ISP.

Hi guys, I'm having a dilemma on which wisp to go for. Amobia, sonic, snowball or sprintnet. I live in Claremont... Southern suburbs, Cape Town.
I'd like to get a 2mps line uncapped and use it mainly for streaming, Skype and browsing.

Sonic seems to be a winner according to this thread however I would prefer to go with a month to month contract as I'll be moving premises in December.

Any suggestions on who I should go for?

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback!

They're coming to do my site inspection on Tuesday! Hope it's successful so that I can move off this god awful ADSL from Telkom.
On the router side, Sonic probably sells their own? I'm sure there are other options? What exactly would I be looking for? I'm assuming my current ADSL2/2+ router won't work.

As far as I know you need a wireless router with a WAN port which is different to the adsl one. Anyone with any suggestions on value for money?

If you plan to do only Web Browsing and Skype with no gaming i think Amobia would be cheaper..they do how ever have a extreme port shaper that blocks anything that has not been added to HiPro so almost all non high profile games do not work online.

Router wise you have a lot of options. If it is only for 1 pc you can plug it directly into the PC from your POE Adapter that the WISP will provide upon install if you need to get Wifi indoors any cheap Wifi router will do. It does not need a WAN Port unless you want to dail pppoe on your Router rather then the WISP CPE

Ok so Sonic will provide me with the antennae etc and then a point into which I plug a lan cable which then goes to the router? If I understand correctly..?

You will get the antennae that comes with a router that goes on a pole..they will run a lan cable from that router to your house that you can plug into a Switch/HUB or Router depending on how you want it setup...but it should work either way yes to make it easy you will be given a LAN Cable from outside to plugin to whatever device you want to use..can even be directly to your PC
