Hello all,

Does the K850i support vodacoms new HSDPA 3.6 speeds? They dont say it on Vodacoms website but the phone it self supports that speed however.

Thanks

Yip it does.
That site say the 6110 supports 3.6 but thats not true...

Thanks, okay yesterday i activated the service. so how would i know if im getting that speed. browsing does seem abit faster though. BTW im using OSX Tiger.

thanks, this is the result...

You need to activate the 3.6 Free Trial on your account first.

I did activate it yesterday and i recieved a sms saying its now activated. BTW im using pay as you go and not a contract.

I did however activate it on a Samsung ZV50 but now using the K850i .... does vodacom install new settings on the phone?

thanks

Nope, nothing is stored on the phone or the SIM Card for the free 3.6 trial - it's all done on the network side.

You should be getting better speeds, even for 1.8, try doing the speed test a few times, but outdoors if you have a notebook attached to your 3.6 capable modem.

Also note that due to Telkodemonopolies failing to provide Vodacom with sufficient backhaul capacity in some areas, the base-stations themselves support 3.6 in terms of the radio network, but the backhaul experiences congestion.

I been using a Vodacom 3G sim with the E220 since July last year. Whenever the modem connects it says connected at 3.6mb per second. I assume that is the modems max speed but doesn't necessarily mean I am provisioned for the 3.6mb per second service from Vodacom.

I have traditionally always experienced very good speeds using the www.speed.vodacom.co.za speed test (around 1500kbps on average).

How is the K850i connected to the pc? If it is via Bluetooth, then the chances are the pc only supports Bluetooth 1.x, which will limit your speed to the 694kbps seen

You need Bluetooth 2 or USB to see higher transfer speeds.

hi, the phone is connected to the pcf via cable (usb), there is no speed difference even with bluetooth. i have a very high spec pc as well but am running osx on it anyway (hackintosh).

please help as to trying to get faster speeds

Thanks

Okay I managed to get 3.6mbps speeds now. I had to change the network profiles on the phone from vlive to vodacom. It was using vlive to connect.

DAMN ITS FAST, getting 4 times the speed now.

What are the actual numbers you're getting?

My guess would be between 2.2 and 2.8Mbps?

well actually it fluctuates. quite slow today. last night i was downloading at 210kbps .... today i only get 100kbps

i dunno? maybe it vodacom maybe its the phone - or maybe its just SOUTH AFRICA - lol

what you think>????

No HSDPA on Vodacom and slow speed with Sony Ericsson K850i

This is less of a question, and more of a warning.

Like the majority of people with any computer sense, I loathe the Vodafone firmware on handsets issued by Vodacom.

And so I flashed my phone with the R1CA037 generic firmware for South Africa (by Davinciteam). This worked very well until recently when I became aware that I just cannot get HSDPA speed with my handset. No matter where, I would get about 350kbps download and 50kbps upload.

At exactly the same location, I used my simcard in a Novatel PC Card HSDPA modem and got 1800kbps.

This (together with all kinds of other troubleshooting tricks) I narrowed the problem down to my handset. And just for the record, neither SonyEricsson nor Vodacom had any ideas or suggestions for my problem.

So I paid 10 euro again, and flashed my phone back to the original Vodafone software R1CA029 and I planned to take it into some kind of customer care centre in order for Vodacom to have a look at my handset.

Turns out, taking the handset to them was not even necessary - after reverting back to the Vodafone firmware, the problem with my download speed just vanished.

I now get download of about 1900kbps and upload of 310kbps.

Moral of the story - flashing is OK, but obviously there is something in that Vodafone software that is the secret to accessing their HSDPA network.

And another thing - even if you are receiving HSDPA signal, the phone will ONLY show 3G. The 3+ or H symbols do NOT show in South Africa.

3g icon on k850i

I went to Stellenbosch for the weekend from Gauteng, and OBVIOUSLY my new K850i went with me. Now I can actually confirm that the 3g+ icon did appear, and I am on Vodacom.

I hate the VLive branding and all it's hideous functions (the live! button occupying the right hand touch button, the f Mo the meerkat skins etc.), but I am glad that the HSDPA seems to actually work on the phone.... something that the techies at vodacom could not help me with.
