Sony Ericsson arc Android Gingerbread will arrive in SA

"Sony Ericsson SA couldn't provide a recommended retail price for the device, but said that the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is expected to be available in SA from Q2 2010."

Should probably read Q2 2011???

Can you say expen$ive?

But specs looks good. Might replace my N900 in 1.5 years time....

Else something with a quad core chip in a tablet/phone :)

i wouldnt get it... by the time they push upgrades Android will be in v5 already. Same goes for Samsung.

I suspect as time goes on the cell companies will start pushing sooner and sooner. It is a whole new model that they need to get used to, so it will get better. My HTC is just one example. Back it 2008 it seems leaf tried to do their little tricks, it failed and now they stopped it. Unfortunately some people got burned in 2008 on the HTC phones because of it, they prop. upgrade to Samsung now.

Sorry SE, un-cripple my X10 first and I might think about ever supporting you guys again in future.

Can MyBB do a bit of research on the Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices available in SA yet, prospect phones coming to SA and how one can get hold of them ?

Vodacom sell the HTC Trophy, I got mine from them in December; not sure what else they have, I just snapped up the first they got. Nice phone - no outstanding features like a giant screen or QWERTY kb, but above average with all the specs. Nice small, light, nippy workhorse WP7 device. They said Samsung's WP7 phone is coming later in the year, no set date yet.

Sod. I want it but I am due for an upgrade tomorrow. What to do?

would suggest you wait it out for three months, if you can..
lots of new phones being announced at MWC next month, if they dont announce them in CES by 9th jan.

new phones that are getting a lot of press in CES so far are:
Motorola Atrix (this is more like a super-smart phone with dual 1 ghz chips, 1gb ram)
LG optimus 2X
Sony Ericsson Arc
Samsung Infuse (Not sure if this will be available outside US)

On a side note:
looking forward to buying a honeycomb tablet.....really like the new android 3.0 interface (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPUGNCIozp0)

Well I was thinking for the HTC Desire HD tomorrow. Though, I have been an SE fanboi for many many years but their current offering did not impress me... until yesterday. But 3-4 months, seems a waste of a good contract. Bugger.

Another thing, it looks to have the same specs as the X10, only they've enabled multi-touch... Why bother releasing a new phone then?

Yeah on paper it looks very similar....

Think the main advantages of the ARC are:
-The processor (snapdragon 2) is faster than the x10 and it has a discrete gpu
-sony Bravia mobile engine screen
-its slimmer
-has a much better 8mp camera with a Sony EXMOR R sensor (used in some cybershot cameras) which is good for taking low light pics
-HDMI out

According to GSMarena, its the exact same QSD8250 1Ghz Snapdragon as the X10. Ditto for the screen, it's just a fancy brand name. Don't know about the camera, but my guess is: the same. And HDMI out isn't really something to get excited about, its a bit 2007. I just run my DLNA server and stream everything to my pc or Blu-ray player. No messing about with cables for me thanks.

Oh and all current Snapdragons have GPU's in, the Adreno. It was specifically designed with 3d in mind.

I am quite sure that is not correct. I read the Arc whitepaper and the processor in the Arc is MSM8255 Qualcomm Snapdragon.
From what I have read on forums it is about 4x faster than the xperia x10 1ghz snapdragon chip (dont know how accurate that statement is)

The bravia screen is definitely much better that the xperia x10....the screen is very good....but the viewing angles aren't that great(I prefer it that way, so other ppl cant see what you doing on the phone). Dont think it is as good as the Galaxy S or iphone 4...

The reviews will def go into detail about the screen and the camera so until then I have no idea if infact it is actually better or just marketing talk.
as for the GPU the xperia x10 has a Adreno 200 GPU while the Arc has a Adreno 205 GPU.

From what I remember, the Arc has the same snapdragon chip and as the the Desire HD.

edit: to compare the snapdragon chips, I found this article comparing the HTC Desire HD (MSM8255) vs the HTC EVO (QSD8250) chips

The only difference between the 8255 and 8250 is the 45nm process instead of 65nm, meaning it will use less power, and the the different GPU. Thats where the (theoretical) 3 to 4 times speed increase comes in. The screen, how is it "better"? Looks like the marketing dept got to you. It's got the same resolution as the X10, but since it's slightly bigger, the pixel density is lower. Just like the old Walkman phones and Cybershot phones had exactly the same cameras on, they just decided to call one cyber-shot and one not.

A quick mention of the x10 and arc screen. Link:

I agree its still too early to tell, would rather wait till the full reviews are out.

Anybody got any idea when the SA ARC will get here...

Was at the Vodashop today for an upgrade and with the criteria of an Android platform and a good camera, it seemed my only options where the HTC Desire HD and the SE Xperia X10...

I have been using SE for years and would have taken it, except for the camera which seems a let down. Doesn't seem to have a proper flash... Although the vodashop said that with Android 2.2 they got the flash working properly - they couldn't guarantee this though.

Sony Ericsson SA recently tweeted that the device would be here in May: http://twitter.com/SonyEricssonSA/status/54886226985099264

I'm toying with the idea of starting a thread to help keep track of all the release dates of smartphones, tablets, and mobile OS updates. I'd love to do an article every time updated information is available, but that isn't always possible. Plus I think it would be cool to have all the info available in one place.

Does anybody maybe have any news on when we can expect the arc? Its almost the end of may and still no word. Thinking of just getting the desire hd...
