Sony Ericsson P990i

Hi there P990 crusaders

Looks like we have been dropped. I enjoy using my phone but am really disappointed that SE have adopted this cavalier approach.

Sometimes a company needs to realise that they are beating a dead horse. Maybe it is indeed time that they gave up on the P990 as the issue simply cant be fixed-- ie not enough RAM.

In those situations though it would be good to admit having made an error and allow at the very least a substantial discount to anyone who purchases the new device that does meet expectations on trading in an old phone. It about accepting responsibility.

Even if SE just swap the RAM module on my phone, converting it from 60MB to 128MB, I would be VERY happy.

RAM aside, is the no chance that the people behind UIQ + Symbian can out out patches, rather than SE itself; this may be a stupid question, but the way i see it, these 2 entities are also going to suffer as a result of what SE have done.

I'm not sure of what the relationship between the above parties is, so i dont know how possible this really is.

Sony Ericsson owns UIQ... that's not good.

I've been thinking a lot about the whole 'SE says - screw anyone with a P990i' debacle & I can't help but wonder how much this will hurt them.

Mind you, SpiderMan3 raked in some good money for the Sony empire, so guess they can afford to give their customers the finger.

true, but the PSP has also generated some bad publicity, quite a few people were unhappy with how the PS3 was dealt with, and now the drama of this.

For me, i can actually survive with these bugs on the 990, but can i survive with a company who dont communicate, when they do so its in an arrogant manner and who seem content with putting out a message of SCR*W you?

Johan on the SE dev board seems to be the only person who cares, but when he said that nobody at head office was available, alarm bells started ringing.

For me, i know i dont use the phone as aggressively as the rest of you, but to be dealt with like this? i wouldn't take it from anyone else, and SE hardly have a monopoly in the cell phone market.

Great Pity.

ha ha, when i saw your earlier post about them being R2000, i thought the same thing. ESPECIALLY as i nearly bought one for $700 2 months ago

RAM Issue

If only there was a way to get the phone to use some of the memory stick duo as ram. My 4 gig should be enough!

Why can't SE just send a huge container full of 128MB RAM modules to the manufacturing plant in France and swop it with the 60MB RAM modules??

Then all our problems are solved... ;)

(Sorry to interrupt you Ultra MunX)

Well people, I manage to get SOMETHING right.. Last night I emailed my letter I posted on the SE DEV forum (adding Niklas Sivander shocking response) to the international SE Support Center (obviously routing it our local South African Support), including a link to the now famous SE DEV site.

This morning I followed it up by phoning them, giving them my reference number I received back from their Auto-Reply. The first line support guy didn't have a clue what I was talking about, but after telling him the whole story, I said I would consider legal action if SE don't continue their support of the current UIQ3 devices - referring to missing functionality and critical bugs. He said he will take it to his superiors and will get back to me before close of business today.

Big surprise: today just before 5pm I received a call from our Sony Ericsson Manager for South Africa, apologizing for the current state of affairs. She said she is aware of the whole situation, but is not allowed to make any official statements. But after making sure I had the latest version of FW, she said they will replace my P990 with a P1i free of charge as soon as it reaches our shores. (!!!)

Now I am not sure that I actually want a P1i after the whole P990 fiasco, but she said did confirm that all known issues with the P990 will be resolved in the P1i. And the extra RAM will only help.

So people, don't give up! If we apply enough pressure, we will get something right, and she did acknowledge they are definitely aware of what is going on. She said she will also personally submit my complaint directly to the developer devision in Europe. :D
