Sony Ericsson P990i

Has anyone figured out how to get to the Preloads on the Memory stick???
I think I am just being doff!!! Any help would really be appreciated!!

Thanks a mil :)

Hi Nixxon

If I understand your question correctly:

On your P990i, click on Applications (Main Menu – icon with the 4 circles), then MultiMedia (icon with an earth & camera), then click on “Try and Buy” (icon looks like memory stick with diamond-like thingy in front of it).

This will open your browser for you, linked to a locally saved html page on your memstick. On this page you will find links and descriptions to the different Apps on your memstick. Browse this like you would normally browse an internet site. Click on the ‘download’ links to install the selected app (don’t stress, it won’t really download – only fetch it locally from your memstick).

Otherwise, you can browse to the different app SIS files on your memstick with your File Manager (under Tools), and install the app by opening the selecting the .SIS file.

The path: MEMORYSTICK\document\trybuy\apps

Hope this helps.

Bruce000 I have already commented on the phone pls read my above posts ! :)
Since I made them my opinion on the phone has not changed ! :)

And yeah, guys, you can all blame me if your unhappy, I ain't afraid of you ...:p

( Anyway I predict little unhappiness once you have the phone )

Kingrob are you still enjoying your phone. I'm a little weary about the phone since I've read all the bad review. Scared of making a mistake:confused:
Should be picking mine up on Wednesday.
Cheers

Hi Bruce000 (and to those who might be interested)

I’ve received my phone a week ago, and so far I’m very happy with it.

I’ve had the P800 and P910i before this, and I’m not disappointed. I feared the worst having read the literally thousands of negative remarks about the phone on the international forums, but knew that most of them are written by people who does not know what they are talking about. Most of the issues they saw as “bugs” are more “finger trouble” and plain stupidity (on their part). Most of all, some people are just pissed off they had to wait so long – and for that they expect the P990i to be the phone of all phones. And it is not. But it is still a damn good phone in the true P-series tradition.

Granted, SE made big mistakes in their planning of this phone’s development, but mostly I think some of the development issues were mostly out of their control (development of UIQ3.0 running late etc.). I say this due to my involvement in software and hardware development. One thing slips, and the whole project suffers. Worst thing they could have done was to announce the phone so early before they knew everything was under control.

Coming back to the phone. It is definitely not the most sexiest phone I’ve ever seen. BUT it is built well. Good materials used, good general design, and it feels good in your hand. And it is surprisingly light. I think it is partly due to the battery being so much smaller and thinner (cannot judge the battery life yet). I must say the P990i looks very sexy when you remove its flip keypad. And you get used to it after a while – the more you look at it, the more you like it.

All the buttons works and feel good, and the qwerty keyboard actually works well if you get used to it. I would have like a more dedicated numerical key allocation like in the Treos though..

The screen is a nice upgrade to the P910’s screen, and is very bright and clear. There are better ones out there, but it is still very good with a high resolution. It does not work well in the SA sun though…

The big controversy is the OS. Some people say it got way more complicated, everything is “different” etc. etc. But I like it. Once you’ve got to know it (and I’m still learning), and is willing to get out of you comfort zone for a little while, it is actually very nice. I find it much easier to get into this OS than the UIQ2.1 of the earlier P-series models. How I see it is like this (and I saw this reference by someone in another respectable forum too): It is like the big jump from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. And you know Windows 95 created the platform for 2000, XP, Vista etc.

Only problem of this phone (and everybody knows this by now) is the memory issue. Don’t know if it is a memory leak, or just plain bad management, but it runs out very soon and can cause instability. That said I actually haven’t had too much instability issues during my first week. I’ve loaded this Swiss Manager app everybody is raving about, and it seems to definitely help. But SE is known for fixing their bugs (with a little bit of wait) and I am quite sure they will address this problem. I hope so, otherwise they seriously under-designed the memory for this phone.
I’ve read on the Esato forum that there MIGHT (just might) be a new Firmware release next week (Week 48), so I’ll watch that space. Current firmware versions are: Ph: R7A001, Org:R3B01, Bt:R4F01.

Last thing that might be worth mentioning is, is the applications for Symbian 9 UIQ3.0. Not a lot out there at the moment, but hopefully will add up soon due to the OS also being loaded on the M600, P950 etc. Also I’ve heard somewhere that Nokia now is also launching (or have already) a Symbian UIQ phone. That will stimulate the development community out there..

Lastly, and I heard this from Sony Ericsson themselves, is that the P990i’s that are “branded” like Vodacom/Vodaphone/O2 do with theirs, causes all kinds of problems: memory, crashes etc. - A huge frustration for SE since they are not allowed to remove the branding from the phones. So in Europe you hear of huge return rates due to this very reason.

Fortunately for MTN customers – they supply you the unbranded clean spanking VIRGIN phone! Gotta love MTN for that.

So Bruce000, I hope this answered your question a bit. Of course this is all my personal opinion after having the phone for 1 week, so please consider it as such.

Regards
Gecko

Sorry guys...been busy at work all day !

But I'll pop in during the evenings, and during the day as well whenever possible :)

PS @Gecko nice succinct summary. Except I would compare the OS to going from Commodore64 to Mac !

Hi,

Yes, we are working on delivering more 3G streaming channels. By February we should have SuperSport as a streaming offer and by the end of the first quarter at least 3-5 others. It is our intention to provide a comprehensive offering by the end of 2007 and will continue to add more channels as we conclude contracts with the relevant content owners.

Regards,

The streaming you referring would be an IP-based stream and the P990 should support this (once Volantis has an entry for it). This would work in the same way that many of the higher-end devices support video streaming.
However, this streaming is not the same DVB-H and normal handset's cannot be upgraded for DVB-H.

MTNDD..yes..it is just the normal 3G IP-based streaming that I am after. DVB-H is only for folks who want that single ugly-assed handset that supports it
I am probably not the only P990 user that is going to want to see LiveTV or streaming traffic cameras soon..so please can you see what you can do about escalating the ticket with Volantis?
I find it odd that they would not have updated the db with a new phone like the P990. It is the sole reason I bought the phone..since my P900 wasn't capable, and the P990 should easily be capable of supporting live streaming?
Btw..any inside info on whether or not MTN has plans to add additional channels besides CNN and fashion TV? Vodacom has about 16...but believe it or not...their branding of the phones cost them the contract.

Went to MTN shop in Centurion this morning, my name is number 5 on the list for a P990. I played around with a P990i dummy in the shop and I might start to like this puppy. I'll just buy a N95 cash when it comes out. :)

Ok, it's a bit off-topic, but who started MTN in South Africa? Naspers?

Government initiative I think, or something along those lines.

Awesome mini-review there Gecko! I must say I loved my P990i despite Vodafone branding, but nothing compares to the original SE software I can tell you that!

I had my phone unbranded yesterday and I am in heaven! As Gecko said - the many negative reviews on the phone, besides for the RAM issue, is purely novice users who do not understand how to operate the phone to it's best potential. It is totally a learning curve, especially for me I went from S60 to this, but I've got the hang of it now and I am very impressed. Not only am I safe from idiots figuring out how to get to personal data, but I now have a device that never leaves me bored when waiting!

One last point - yeah it definately isn't the most beautiful phone out there - but once you got a nice theme installed, when you see that vivid colourful screen you melt and forget about the exterior looks!

/ shoos kingrob off in the direction of the N95 thread

This was absolutely unbearable - the king couldn't live with this rejection from the queen!!! :(

Ok, so I've ordered the twin pack Martin Fields Overlay Plus Screen Protector for my new P990i & one for my P910i from www.doml.com - can't wait for it to arrive.

Aqualung mentioned it in an earlier post and I can agree - DomL is trustworthy. When I got my P800 in 2002 (or was it 2003?), I ordered a Sony 128MB memory stick from them and it arrived in no time.

Now I want my P990i! :)

Hi kingrob

Is the Martin Fields Overlay Plus Screen Protectors worth the money? I was looking for a good one out there. Is it really 'crystal clear' as they say it is?

Thanks,
Gecko

Yes, it is.

*I should have ordered it for my P910i a year ago, but didn't. I write a lot on my screen and when I had to replace it - R1200. Will not make the same mistake twice.

I ordered 2X Martin Fields for the P990i and one for my P910i - $41.97 (R303), including shipping costs.

@Gecko - yes it really is crystal clear. If applied properly you honestly can't see that it is on the screen. Definitely worth the money.

@Bruce000 - sorry I did not mean to sound curt, been very busy at work and not had time for lengthy posts the last few days :o

I agree with everything Gecko says in his post...you won't be sorry you get this phone ! ( You're getting it tomorrow aren't you ? ;) ) Even my colleagues at work who aren't really into smartphones have cast a longing eye on it...

Post when you get it ( I'm sure you will ! ) and if you have any queries about installing software etc will do my best to help ;)

@ kingrob...I sense a sudden ...capitulation ( must be the purchase of the P990 screen protector  ) Not long to go !

PS will be on a course Thurs / Fri so will only be online A/H then !

P.S. try mobile9.com there are some stunning wallpapers ( it's all free ) look under the 'abstract' section in particular . Render exquisitely on the P990 !

I played with a dummy P990i in the MTN shop and thought - screw it, let's do it. If the N95 is a cool phone, I'll get one when it gets released.

What course are you doing?
