Sony Ericsson P990i

That's odd...

should only have ONE firmware version ( ONE PDA version, one CDA etc ) phone seems to have two F/W versions...

you have a schizophrenic phone ! :p

( Sorry trying to bring out the light side here ) :)

But definitely something very strange going on with firmware...

Vodacom or NM must sort this out tomorrow !

Look at the esato thread or see the settings I posted above...sounds like you might have to advise them WHAT F/W version to flash the phone to !

Rellik: Are you sure that you need a sim card to use seus? As far as I can see, you are supposed to do it with the sim card out. Have you tried it?

Here is a piece I found off a forum:

Here is what I just did, my first time using SEUS ... Mr. Green
Had a little bit shaky hands given some people trouble.

PC: Downloaded the latest updater as explained here

PC:
Hit install.
Then opened the installer from the menu.
Nice flash presentation.
Accepted the disclaimer.
Choosed the port type (the left one).
Then got the Start screen.
Followed the instructions.

P990:
Shutdown phone.
Connected the phone while holding C.

PC:
USB device found pop up screen.
Then it failed with an error.
Disconnected phone and rebooted the PC.
Then started up again the installer.

P990:
Took out the battery of the phone.
Took out SIM.
Put battery back in.
Hold down the C on the phone.
Connected the USB to Phone.

PC:
After a little while, the installer told me to stop pressing the C.
Then it told me Generic P990 something.
Asked a few times if I really wanted to update and that I did take a backup.
Then it started downloading the software.
Then it started updating the phone, while in the meantime telling me not to touch the phone.
After about 10 to 15 minutes (nice progress bar) it was done, and the phone was updated.

P990:
Disconnected the phone, and started up.
Was like the first time when I opened the box.
Took about 5 minutes to configure the phone.

And then there was the SMS message of registering and a new Bluetooth screen, asking to turn it on.

I noticed during the upgrade it basicly used up 50 % of the battery life, so make sure you have a full battery as recommended by SE.

Not sure it helps, since it is pretty straightffw proces, but just want to share what I did step by step as asked by bloomp.

Calendar Synching with Novell Groupwise

Has anyone been able to synch their calendar with the P990i if they're using Novell Groupwise ?

The P900 I had did it easily as long as MS Outlook was also installed on your machine.

So far no success with the calendar synch with my P990i.

I see www.toffa.com have a solution but its for the backroom boys & girls to load onto their servers, not for me (that I can see).

Otherwise, the phone is superb, a great look & feel jump from the P900. Am still mighty confused where to find everything after a week so the learning curve keeps going.

am running off a Mac at home...no iSync support yet for Mac and P990...Sorry have no useful suggestion apart from a google search !:)

Aqualung: Are you on MTN? and using a P990i?

I really appreciate your guys's input here, i would have just given up and taken it back to VC

Still trying to get phone to be detected in SE software.....

* Don't let kingrob see these posts :p *

With such a wise queen, my kingdom is in good hands!! Three cheers for the queen!!

Unfortunately I was called by two of my knights & a young hand-maiden to attend a gathering at Primi Extreme, Design Square, Fourways today. (Fourways is in Johannesburg, for all the Capetonians :)) I had the unpleasant task to try and finish the biggest man-made burger I've ever seen, but fortunately my loyal subjects know their place and didn't try to make fun of their king, when he couldn't finish the monster burger.

We were discussing the P990i, amongst other important kingdom-related matters, and the young hand-maiden showed her interest by asking a lot of questions to the king. She has a Nokia 9300 and proclaimed that Nokia forgot to add a turbo button for the phone - the menus are damn slow, in fact, everything is slow on that phone!

I think it was the queen's constant nagging that made me say: 'So why don't you get a P990i?' The words were out before I could close my mouth. :(

Have you tried disabling your anti virus and spyware software... As well as making sure that your usb desktop stand and phone, are recognized by your operating system before you try seus?

This must be very frustrating for you :(

Havent even gotten close to seus.
Windows isn't recognising the phone properly yet, have uninstalled the software completely and busy reinstalling.....

@Rellik

You got screwed by your service providers (Vodacom and Nashua Mobile). Take it back to them tomorrow (better to take it to a Vodacom technical outlet) and get it flashed. You can also contact Sony Ericsson SA directly at 0861632222 to get advice. They are quite helpful with their advice. You might even consider reporting it to Vodacom Headquaters (they are not such bad guys). MTN fortunately is providing clean unbranded P990s.

Also keep trying to install & detect & update your phone via the update software. It works really well once Windows are fully aware of your phone (and have the newest Flash Player installed (damn irritating))!

It's all really worth it. Great phone. And then there is also the prospects of a possible newer firmware version to be released next week sometime... i hope.

Keep at it. And give NM and VC some grief.

Good luck.
Gecko

@kingrob - the queen doesn't nag !

 She merely....suggests.

@rellik - agree with gecko. NM have sold you a lemon by the sound of it.

Go give 'em hell ( and as suggested in the Vodacom F/W thread by I think it was PsyLenT : refuse to deal with a front desk underling, persist till you speak to one of the techies ! )
Don't forget to ask them to debrand the phone while they are flashing it - if that is your preference.

@MJB - yes.

Phoned Nashua, they will replace the phone.
But they have to send it to JHB to do replacement, so it will take 4 days before i can have a new phone !!!
Im tempted to just go into a vodcom shop and see if there's not a techie that can do the flash for me.
Anyone know where in CT they can do it onsite?

dunno. Best just to phone one shop and ask them where in Cape Town to go. Worth the try (to prevent the 4 days of agony).
