Sony Ericsson P990i

Let's hope the P3i will be one kick-ass smartphone... and restore our trust in SonyEricsson.

Anyone know where I could get a good deal on a stylus, I just lost my spare :(

I think you can buy a stylus at any MTN or Vodacom shop - if you're near Vodaworld in Midrand, just go to SonyEricsson's own shop.

Hey, it's still alive!!

Aqualung, any news on the Open letter sent to SE's new CEO?

Apparently the new CEO's secretary received it, opened it, read through it - and filed it promptly in cabinet 13. :)

Huh ! Possibly !

Tomorrow's the first official day of the 'reign' of the new CEO.

I'd like to think some kind of statement / action will be forthcoming.

But I won't be surprised if it doesn't.....

Fortunately I have documented the dates I phones SE UK HQ to confirm the letter's arrival, and the names of the people concerned, including the aforementioned P.A.

Should things get so bad I have to write another letter (even if it's just a letter from myself as one unhappy customer) I have all of that info at hand.

Like I said on my-symbian, if it comes to that, it would be nice to be able to publish the letter-sequel as a full page ad in a major newspaper!

That'll get noticed !

(Remember the guy with the Landrover problems a year or two ago who did just that ? It embarassed the company horribly and they actually had to respond to his very valid complaints!)

Anyway, let's see what the next couple of weeks brings, starting with tomorrow

You did what you could, aqualung, and that is all that's important. Now you can imagine how consumers feel that write complaints to Telkom....

*Would love to buy you lunch when i'm down in Cape Town again. :)

End of a love affair

As you probably know from earlier posts in the forum, I have had a year-long love affair with my shiny SE P990i. I have put up with the little glitches (like a good mate would), bought gifts to make my sweetie look nicer, things like styluses, screen protectors, pouches, memory stick ... I really tried my best to make this work.

So you can imagine my shock when I woke up Thursday, only to find that my sweetie eloped with a complete and utter stranger while I was asleep ... with no explanation or even contact details I can use to try and re-establish the relationship.

Luckily I was able to get a P1i as a replacement. It's not quite the same, there's no bond any more ... but we will see what happens. Maybe there could be a P3i on the horizon, who knows.

Anyways, I have had my P1i for 2 days now, and I must admit, this is what I thought the P990i would be like when I got it. This is a usable device, got enough memory to run whatever I want (like Fring + Opera). Meesa like. Now I just need to get used to the lack of a flip, the keylock that keeps catching me by surprise and the keyboard.

A quick question - maybe people here can tell me if this is expected, or if I am doing something wrong? Is it possible to use the supplied (YES! Meesa like!) GPS at the same time as a bluetooth audio receiver (in this case my bluetooth car kit)? I have tried, but it seems the device cannot handle two simultaneous bluetooth devices.

I am also pondering whether I should leave my P1 with its installed Swedish (I think) firmware, or whether I should change it to a GW alternative.

(Yes, I do bear a grudge. And I hope karma catches up with the stranger in the night)

@aqualung - sorry I didn't respond to you for so long, I had some personal and professional issues keeping me away from here for a while. I did however read the letter you sent off and agree completely with it. Just hoping something happens now. I have had too many run-ins with the support desk myself. They are less than useless when it comes to smartphones.

<Edit> Having used WayFinder a bit today, is there any way of making it louder? When I put the phone on my leg and drive I can sometimes barely hear the voice over the noise of my car and surrounding traffic. </edit>

@Valerion: Could you please explain what type of GPS came with your phone? Was it just software or did it also come with the SE GPS Headset, or some other GPS device? I've seen local print ads for the phone that advertise it with Wayfinder.

A question for anyone who can help: The P990 has 'push e-mail' is it necessary to have a Blackberry subscription for this or can it run with standard GPRS on the 3G Network? I ask because quite recently Gmail have added an IMAP service to their e-mail, and all new e-mail accounts on the phone (since some upgrade or the other) have a 'push e-mail option'?

My phone shipped with a Wayfinder bluetooth GPS device and a 12 month subscription to Wayfinder.

For push email with IMAP AFAIK you just need a server that supports IMAP IDLE and a data subscription, but I never tested it. Don't want my mail on my phone right now - I get enough as it is :) Though it is not true push technology, as a link to the server needs to be open at the time.

aaaaah

WATER DAMAGE !!! got caught in a massive thunderstorm, on the krugersdorp highway, p990 in my jackets "waterproof" pocket. phone got DRENCHED. flip

it still works but man its doing weird weird things. fully charged will suddenly indicated flat batt and shut down, or on start up is flat batt then 20 mins later is fully charged. its not the batt coz i had a spare batt and it does same on batt.

phone is insured but isnt water damage technically irreperable?

Time for a new car ! :D

PS: maybe close the window?

Found out that the volume is dependant on the Multimedia volume setting. Which is by default at 50-75% ... If I set that to max, then I can hear the instructions clearly.
