Sony Ericsson P990i

well if you read in earlier in this thread, my poor 990 drowned, and thank goodness my insurance did pay out... so i was pretty fortunate to be able to replace with almost anything. played a lot with a p1 , decided against p990 again for obvious reasons, wont go near any WM device or any nokia so eventually went for iphone... and even after many negative reports i must say... this thing is insane guys. sure it does the odd irritating thing, but nothing like my 990 used to irritate me. it cant send a contact (yet) , it cant do a whole lot of things the 990 could do, but i hacked it a bit and now it can...

its FAST, screen is amazing , and its just so so so different to anything ive ever used before. its like a gadget from star trek, it really is

*** and its got 8 gigs on board :)

:) Where did you buy the iPhone?

Guys, JK8 posted this in the cellular section. Looking good... :)
P5i
The P990 successor in a slider form factor and will slimmer and lighter (approximately 125g) than the P990. It will have a 2.8" VGA screen, GPS, wi-fi 802.11b/g, Symbian OS 9.3,160MB internal memory, wap 2.0 support, C++ support, a 5 megapixel camera (with AF and flash), HSDPA/HSUPA, 128MB RAM, and will run UIQ 3.2 or 4. P5i to be announced in November.
Thats a photoshop of the real device:

Will only be here next year.

Ah, very excited about the new SE smartphone!

It seems that it will be called the P5i and not P3i, as first rumours suggested...

It does look to be a nice phone. But will it be in the same state as the P990 was when first released? The jump to Symbian 9.5 is not so big, but I don't know about the UIQ3/4 jump. This time I will wait a bit before I buy, not jump on the bandwagon straight away.

The state the P1i was in when I bought it was where the M600/P990 should have been when launched. MUCH happier with this phone now than my P990, to be honest. Still miss the flip, and the 4GB MS I had, but that's about all.

@Gecko: My phone's firmware is now updated to R6F41 as well. Seems the non-GW variants are not that far behind, luckily. So no XS++ for me for now. We will see how things go later. Thanks for your offer, though :) I may take you up on it one day ;)

I still say that if the P990i had 128MB RAM, SE would not have released the P1i.... :)

Mmm ... if the P990 had stable firmware and 128MB of RAM, you're probably right :) But it means they could get more mileage from the same phone (keep it on the market longer) for the same R&D cost. While they in the background develop the P1i into a phone that will feature-wise impress people (HSDPA? GPS? Something new and innovative?).

BTW, anyone interested in some P990 accessories? I have a 64MB MS Pro Duo, 2 x brand new pouhces, 1 x slightly used pouch (2 weeks), 1 x screen protector, 1 1 x unopened 3-pack styluses. PM me.

Can someone tell me if this is normal: I can't use my music player and internet at the same time without the music player closing down? Also the automatic keylock doesn't work on my phone (I don't have a flip), all this since the last firmware update

Well, I find that the media player and the browser together barely fit in memory. 64MB was WAY too little for that phone. It happened to me a lot - listened to the radio and it gets cut off when I start to browse. Swiss Manager helped a lot with that.

The auto-keylock I never had an issue with on the P990.

oronte, Valerion is right...the P990i just doesn't have enough RAM to truly multitask....

Mind you, I have never used the internet browser really, my phone becomes slow and unresponsive + I like surfing the net on a bigger screen. :)

Opera works quite well for me. You just can't run anything else at the same time in 64MB :(

But it's useful for the times I am lying in bed being lazy and I have an urge to browse around. No need to even get up, just connect to my WLAN connection and off I go. And you get used to the screen layout after a while.

Okay, thanks. I thought it was just a new problem, I guess I never really tried to use both before. For the first time I'm really starting to get annoyed with my phone. For the second time this month the jog dial has broke and now it's off to Vodacom for at least another 2 weeks before they repair it. The thing is I used the P910 jog dial (which was 5-d) and never had a problem with it.

Anyone on here got some themes experience? Sorry, I am a noob at this.

I DL'ed a few P1i themes lately, and wanted to play around with them. Some of them have got dark backgrounds and use white text on the standby screen to stand out. However, using white text on a gray background in the Notes and SMS editor is REALLY hard to use. Where can I go about changing the colour of either the background or the font used here?

Think you can adjust your screen brightness, but that's about it, Valerion.

*I've been using the Vista theme since December 2006.

Hi, you can download SE's Theme Editor (free) and edit/play around with the theme until you are happy.
