Sony Ericsson P990i

Hehe...I've been standing with the P1i in my hand twice now...but I still prefer my P990i. ;)

Out of curiosity, why is that? I must admit I am more than happy with my P1i, now that I have had it for some time, and I don't really miss my P990i that much any more.

The P1i just doesn't look cool to me...IMHO.

I really hope the P5i will be a 'looker' & have a stable OS + enough RAM under the bonnet.

I'm extremely happy with my P1i. Stable, fast, solid.

but i agree looks-wise (and form factor) the P990 is a clear winner. I still miss my P990.

guys does the P1 come with the gps module or is it via certain networks only?

I'm wondering if there will be a P5i, with the recent announcement of the X1?

I will definitely not be buying the X1, cos it runs Windows Mobile. yuk.

I don't know. Mine was shipped with a GPS module, but I got it directly from Sony Ericsson.

If I remember correctly, someone who got his P1i via Nashua Mobile said it was not shipped with any GPS receiver.

Someone else said he did get one with GPS, but I don't know from what provider.

Personally I think MTN is your best bet since they always seem to get the better deals with Sony Ericsson. Even within Autopage (supplying MTN, Vodacom and Cell C contracts), their MTN deals always have better SE phone options.

MTN also is known not to brand their SE phones (i.e. not Vodacom or Vodaphone branded). They ship their phones with GW1 (World Generic 1) firmware, which benefits you when new firmware is being released. Good example is the P990i.

Best to phone around. Personally my P1i was boxed with the GPS receiver, meaning the box was specifically made to have both inside.

Cheers

My P1 shipped with a GPS, got it from MTNSP. However, it was (unlike my P990) not GW1 firmware, but for Sweden/Norway. Not much of an issue, the firmware just ships later for them than for GW1. Though it's possible to change it afterwards to GW1 if you are willing to do it.

Hey Hey guys!

I was at a braai last weekend and saw someone's P990i lying on the kitchen counter. Oh how my heart sank! Suddenly I felt a twinge as I saw my once loved phone lying there.

Still enjoy my W950i but one thing is for sure, for the applications I like to use most often (mxit, jmirc, mig33) - the SE UIQ just doesn't get the job done, and with my upgrade due middle this year, I'm contemplating jumping ship back to nokia (if I could afford an E90 I'd get that!) or the LG Viewty, my friend got one and WHOA what an awesome phone!

I love my SE's - and it's really with a heavy heart that I'll decide to try something more practical and reliable. Mxit is pretty stable - if you use predictive text. Tap-text entry it crashes - always giving me some or other TAGMA error, usually TAGMA-8. With Mig33 and jmirc it crashes no matter what text entry you use - and it always crashes on text entry.

This was the case with both the P990i and W950i. So what phones do you think a person like myself might go far after the many let-downs brought on by UIQ 3?

Hi PsyLenT!

I had the opportunity to play with a SE W910i last night - and can easily see why it got awarded mobile phone of the year for 2007! Wow - what a great phone!

I'm gonna get the W910i as an upgrade for my 'landline' phone & will wait for the newly announced SE W980i clamshell phone for everyday use. I want something small & funky again...tired of bulky big phones.

I have to say I've used Mxit tonnes of times with no problems on my P990, why not get the W960 or P1, the extra RAM should help, both are available at MTN direct right now (Yes, the W960 is actually in stock, or was on Sunday morning), or else just wait for the P5, but that will probably only arrive at the end of the year. Personally I could never live without a touch screen (like the E90) nor could I live without a smartphone (which the Viewty is not).
W910 looks great and if you're on MTN, I believe they have it free on Mycall 100 (while Vodacom have a ridiculous pay-in).

That's great news Oronte!

I've got a Procall 300 & MyCall 100 contract - and it's the MyCall 100 that's due for an upgrade. :)

Hauzit! hehe. I've decided to not upgrade mid-year, because I've finally realized how unreasonable Vodacom is with their phones, and will now port over to MTN in Oct, going for a Procall 240 I think it is.

MTN offers great phones with no pay in on it's medium contracts, something I can truly appreciate right now. I've still got my eye on the Nokia E90 though. I'll go for SE perhaps in a year or so if I am in a position to take out a second contract, giving me the best of both worlds, and a new phone every year I hope!

The W960i does look good - but one thing I severely miss owning a W950i is a D-Pad. I find that SE could make their touchscreen functionality a little bit simpler if they're going to eliminate the D-Pad on a phone. Fact simply is that with all the touchscreen SE's I've used to date - there are so many icons and things that are simply too small, and require either careful aim or a stylus (which I've now lost! GRR).

This is something I assumed to be totally normal, but after a brief encounter with the LG Viewty I've come to realize how much more user friendly a touch-phone can be if the developers use just a little bit of inguinity in the interface.

The LG vibrates when you use it's screen - which almost makes it feel like there's tactile feedback, you feel a lot more certain when using the phone's screen than you do on my W950i for example. And the W950i does have a 'vibrate' option for certain 'screen presses' but that's ONLY for the '3 main buttons' at the bottom of the screen when available (e.g. on home screen it is 'Calls' 'Expand' and 'More').

Here's to my last few months of Vodacom *cheers* hehe

If you buy a phone now, go for the P1i. Definitely worth it, I would recommend it over the P990 any day. MTN should be able to give you a price easily.

I agree, Valerion - the P990i will always have a problem with insufficient RAM.

Well, I'm still using mine, but only for basic phone functions, like calender, contacts and messaging.

Sad that one has to use a Smartphone like the P990 just for basic functions.. What was SE thinking??

You guys saw they hacked into the private (read&write protected) folders of UIQ3 devices? This hack already spawned the porting of the W960i's Walkman 3.0 player to other UIQ3 phones (to it's internal C-Drive). Tried it - looks and works beautiful on my P1.

Imagine what might be following next.

BTW, I've been out of the loop for a while. Does Auqalung still have her P990, or did she get herself a P1?
