Sony Ericsson P990i

He said you just need to hold the on/off button in for 15 seconds and it will switch off. I will be trying it next time.
Bruce, all I can say - RTFM! (Read the manual... :))

*It's already documented in the P910i's manual, but there it says 10 seconds. Only had to do it twice since I had my P910i - the beta client software for my www.avantgo.com feeds crashed my P910i once or twice. :(

@ neural - what field are/were you in that required the dreaded bleep? ;)
@aqualung - Developed more than a healthy interest in Neurosurgery, but I opted for primary care. I am a GP with more than a little passion for technology and IT, and some time left to enjoy my family ;)

@MJB - sorry for the late reply - I see you've ordered yours already.

Yes that is the case I have, I am very happy with it ( Well made, shows the phone off, covers all the important bits ! )

@neural - aha! Hence the bleeper reminiscence ( they are still as loud and obnoxious sounding as ever! :p )

I've ordered my crystal case last night from Brando - getting all the 'extras', so that when MTN *finally* phones me to come & collect it - the king will be ready! :)

*The 2GB memory stick duo is extremely tempting...

You'll have a well-dressed P990 !

....'cept for the bling of course ;)

Hi Queen Aqualung. :)

No, here in Gauteng they'll hi-jack you just for your mobile phone, so it's best to keep it out of sight and not draw attention to it. They actually watch you in a mall and if you've got a nice mobile, expect a visit from armed men in the parcade - the car is not important. :(

@kingrob I am actually a vaalie - moved down to CT 5 yrs ago to specialise...have not forgotten the paranoia of living there

( CT ain't trouble-free you know ! )

Well, I'm actually a Capetonian and moved here for the *bling*. :) But I'm missing the mountain too much & seriously thinking of moving back.

The weird thing is, most people I meet here are not originally Vaalies - all moved here for the buzz & better work opportunities...but now we're forced to stay most nights at home in our own 'prisons'. :(

I see Cape Town is now also having its share of crime? You been affected directly? Hospital not dangerous?

Not directly no - touch wood.

But one of our professors was mugged in his office a couple of months ago :(

On a lighter note, care for some tips on applying the MF SP ?

Ok

Switch phone off
Clean screen fastidiously using lint free cloth
align SP with screen ( use a small tab of stickytape, or cut the sticky edge off a stickit note and use that, on the smooth side of SP )
apply slowly, use a credit card or something similar to smooth out bubbles as you go
Presto ! :)

I've just copy/paste this into a text file, called Screenprotector.txt - now the Post Office must just play ball!

Thank you, most wise queen! Your guidance is always a source of inspiration.... :)

P990 Vlive ?

Hi all
Had mine for 2 weeks now
Questions / Comments
1. Why did i receive 1 when there is a software upgrade STILL pending from SE
2. Anyone else get Kernel Errors
3. Applying new themes just screw up the display
4. No quick menu selection as with P910 - have to use several buttons to get to call list
5. Checked update on SE web, phone has latest firmware
6. Seems to either delete or not synch certain Tel/Cell numbers from contacts (Outlook 2003)

I love the P range, this one just seems to be problematic and I would like hear of any other feedback

Many thanx

@L_mo

1 This has been discussed ad nauseam on certain overseas forums. As you now there is a firmware update just around the corner
There have been huge issues implementing UIQ 3 for SE. See esato and my-symbian for further info.

2 No I do not get kernel errors. Is your phone VLive branded. See the previous posts in this thread about freeware to deal with memory leaks and resource management on the phone

3 I do not have that problem with themes, although I don't find the bundled SE themes that enthralling. Am sticking to the default one for now ( perhaps this problem is also related to VLive software )

4 in FC or FO mode ?

6 I don't sync ( run off mac by preference ) - sorry can't help there

:)

Hi L_mo

Like Auqalung said, refer to posts earlier in this thread describing the current pros and cons of the phone (with Firmware Ver RA7), as well as esato etc.

Everybody is waiting for the latest FW update (hopefully due this week or December), but I think it will take 2 updates to really sort out the major problem areas of this phone (memory leakage and management).

That said, the phone is fairly stable, enough for me to enjoy and appreciate it for what it is. If you have a branded P990 (Vodaphone etc), you might have more induced problems than other 'clean' P990s supplied by MTN (again see earlier posts in this thread). This might explain your problem with Themes.
For cool themes, I found this site: http://www.se-uiq.com . and select English -> P990.

@rellik: Received a new phone back from NM??

RTFM is a well-known term in the I.T. industry.... :)

I had to support all the journalists' iPAQs when working for Reuters Editorial in London - and I mumbled 'RTFM' to myself a lot...

With every mobile phone I've had, I always go through the same routine:

1. Charge the phone
2. Go and lie on bed
3. Put phone next to me
4. Start reading manual from page 1 to the last page
5. Play & test settings as described in manual

That's what I do for every gadget/phone/electrical appliance that I've bought.

*Ok, I didn't put my DSTV decoder & Denon receiver next to me on the bed... :)

Nope, still waiting.....
I have phoned already this morning, they hadn't received it (was about 09:00).
Yep, its kinda what im starting to expect from Nashua Mobile.
To anyone looking to get a new contract, im starting to bad mouth NM as this whole upgrade experience has been a nasty one.
Now should i wait another day or two, or just port the hell out of here, but then wait (another) couple of weeks to get my phone !!!
Any Vodacom representatives looking for a port, if you can organise me a P990 pretty quick, you'll have a new customer

So sorry to hear that, rellik! :(

I don't even want to phone the MTN shop in Centurion (although I'm no 5 on their short list), because it will just get me excited for nothing.

/kingrob strokes his P910i lovingly

Good day,

Rellik

If you can PM me with problems you've had with Nashua Mobile I'll escalate it to the account manager who’s in charge of watching over Nashua and I'll see if he can maybe arrange someone to get a move on this for you....
