Sony Ericsson P990i

Hi Piesang,

I think you should've posted this under the Cellular: Phones, Call contracts & content, but I suspect you WANT the P990i, but not sure if it will be the right decision. Well, here goes :

The P990i dummy doesn't do the phone justice, it feels 'plasticy' & you can't see UIQ 3 in all it's glory. I honestly think MTN, Vodacom & CellC should demo a 'live' P990i to customers in their shops - and they will sell them by the truckloads.

Interestingly enough, that's how I became a 'P-addict'. I was working in London, my mobile phone contract had just expired & I was shopping for a new phone. Walked into an Orange shop, the guy put a 'live' P800 in my hand, showed me a music video on the phone & I was sold. That was the last day I ever carried a Nokia phone in my pocket... ;)

I was just like you a few months ago, holding the dummy in my hand, disgusted that there's no 5-way jog dial, etc. Then after chatting to the forumites on this thread & knowing that there's no other phone with the same functionality as the P990i, they convinced me that the P990i is definitely worth it.

So, after getting mine, I can tell you this - The P990i is a great phone & exactly what I wanted. :)

*The only other phone that I did consider, was the HP 6915, but fortunately a mate of mine saved me from making a big mistake. He bought one & after just two weeks, he wanted to drive over it with his car. He reckons it's a good PDA, but a useless phone.

... Then I asked for a dummy just to see what the phone looks like when I hold it in my hand. Boy was I disgusted.

Boy you make a big mistake judging the phone on the dummy. I was also disappointed when I looked at the dummy. The real thing is completely different.

But if you want to go the Windows Mobile route, consider the JasJam (TyTn). It's got all the connectivity specs you can dream of. It should be available, or available soon.

Then there is also the Nokia N95 to be released early next year. Look at www.gsmarena.com for specs and reviews.

My last words: Going for the P990i is like choosing Mac over PC..
Your choice!

@Piesang

You are asking for advice on what phone to get. Sounds like you're looking for a PDA/phone hybrid.

Do you want a PDA/phone or a phone/PDA ?

Since you didn't specify what displeased you with the P990, we presume it's the light and 'plasticky' feel it has.

There is a good, detailed and very fair review of it @ my-symbian.com

Agree with kingrob, maybe put this question up in the Cell Phone thread as well.

PS I totally agree with kingrob and Gecko. Personally I'm very happy with the phone ( could fill up a couple of pags telling you why ! ), try and get hold of a functional one !

P990 Screen Protector

If anyone is looking for a screen protector for the P990 and you are in the Midrand area, Vodacom 4u (Vodaworld), has them available. Fits as snug as a bug and clear as crystal. :p

Damn, why did you have to post a link to it? :(

I was actually relieved that Solitaire wasn't on the P990i, because I've wasted so many hours playing it - it's extremely addictive....

Now temptation is back... :)

LOL @kingrob

:D

Hi MTNDD,

I have emailed you the details of my two contracts & numbers to be swapped....

Will be over the moon if we can sort this out!

:)

Good day,

I've emailed MTNSP and will advise you and the forum once done

Thanks MTNDD

Thanks for the info guys. I don't like the design "shape" of the phone. The idea of the keypad that stand out so much. Also the fact that it's actually a year old already.

The release date of the P990i was only in June 2006, so it's five months 'old'? Believe me, I'm glad I didn't get one straight away, the first P990i's had some serious software problems....

Anyone remembers the dreaded 'Restarting phone to optimize performance?'

Mine is just perfect. :)

Well just an update from my side.
I received my phone about a week ago. I'm a vodacom customer, but because of a lack of stock, I actually received a MTN (Unbranded) phone.
I have had no issues thus far. Had the odd kernel issues, but maybe once or twice a day, if had have been jumping between apps alot.
Other than that, I'm very happy with my phone and can't see any network related issues as signal strenght is fairly good and 3g has been performing well.

i'm starting to get addicted to Vijay Singh golf :o

Ok, my crystal case + MF screen protector in on my P990i - and it looks fantastic! Now I know why I should've put a SP on my P910i, damn, it would've saved me R1200! :(

I haven't got any *bling* to put on my phone, but I'll see if aqualung has got some ideas....

Will DEFINITELY be using my P990i for a very long time... I love this phone more by the minute! :)

Hi Guys,

Here is another brain teaser on the P990i... Does anyone know if you can use the front Camera as a webcam for MSN, etc?

Plus, I wonder if there is any news on the F/W release yet?

Still loving mine...

@kingrob, congrats on your SP and crystal case... I ordered mine last week so still waiting for mine to arrive... how many days did yours take?

Thanks, Nixxon!

My crystal case & SP arrived exactly at the same time - took 1 week. :)
