Sony Ericsson P990i

hey aqua and king... hey im not really down and depressed :)

just feels like the right thing to say at the time to express my frustration at being left behind... im smiles ALL the way. and even if my phone crashed every 10 minutes, i would still love it and say its the best phone in the world (coz it is :)

as nice and cute as the iphone is... it still seems a little simple and plain dont you think, compared to what we can really do on our phones. and im loving all the new apps that seem to have suddenly appeared for our phones.

That is great news, kvi!! Was getting worried about you...

Can't agree more with what you said wrt the P990i - there is currently no match for the P990i on the market. No Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, LG, etc comes even remotely close.

The iPhone will be a fantastic phone, make no mistake, but my main gripe is the lack of a stylus. You'll have to constantly clean the screen if it's only touch screen - and what will the screen look like if you've just had some chocolate or picked your nose? :)

I still want to write my first book on my P990i. ;)

@kvi

glad you're not feeling so bad ...!

Don't be deceived by the apparent simplicity of the Mac OS X interface...it is just as powerful ( and IMO opinion faster and more efficient than a lot of what Windows offers...! )

Have you guys noted the stats on this thread ?

1587 posts and 32112 views.

Do not think I have ever seen a thread run this long on any forum

@kingrob

I was playing a 44min movie file, that I converted using M3, on my phone today , when my wife phoned. answered the call and spoke to her for about 40 seconds. Then when I tried to start the movie again..... no go.

Mediaplayer would start up but show black screen and no audio while slider and counter moves. Tried SWM to clean up all apps and reclaim memory , then tried again. no go.

In the end I had to restart phone in order to work again.

B.t.w. I can not get SWM to auto load on startup... what am I missing ?

not sure if this has been posted yet.

tip to improve the speed of the ui- open a video (any video will do), and pause it after a second or two; leaving it running, switch away and check the speed of the menus. thats it.

@hanno...the new firmware has disabled autostart on 3rd party apps. So you will have to start SM manually after reboot

( see the my-symbian forum, UIQ 3 thread for more info )

I don't use M3 so can't help there

Yes, I've read on the my-symbian forum that it has happened to other people's P990is as well. Guess there is still work for SE to do....

*Thought this is quite interesting....

What hardware is inside my P990?

UIQ 3 based Sony Ericsson phones (P990i, M600i and W950i) use ARM9-based Philips Nexperia PNX4008 application processor in 90-nm CMOS technology, running at 208 MHz.

The CPU subsystem combines a 208 MHz ARM926-EJ processor with dedicated 32k instruction and 32k data caches. It also includes a memory management unit (MMU), a debug port, and a DMA controller.

The video subsystem includes an encode acceleration JPEG decoder, an MPEG-4/H.263 encoder/decoder, and a graphic accelerator, plus LCD and camera interfaces. It supports still pictures resolution of up to 4 Megapixels and can interface to LCD with up to QVGA 18-bit resolution and a refresh rate up to 60 fps. The MPEG-4/H.263 encoder/decoder works with all resolutions up to CIF (352x288) running at 30 fps.

The 2D/3D graphics accelerator (PowerVR from ARM and Imagination Technologies) complies with OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs. Running at 80 MHz, it delivers a typial performance of 150 Megapixels per second and 1.25 million polygons per second.

The audio subsystem combines a fully dedicated DSP (digital signal processor) with integrated digital-analog converters (DACs) and analog-digital converters (ADCs). The audio DSP can operate independently from the ARM CPU and can reference embedded RAM memories for full audio flexibility. For stereo sound, there are two integrated stereo DACs and one stereo ADC. There are also two PCM interfaces, carrying 8- or 16-kHz sample-rate voice channels.

The security subsystem (from Discretix) consists of three coprocessors, a random number generator, and a unique secret crypto key that uses embedded fuses. The PKI coprocessor supports RSA, ECC, DSS, and DH. The symmetric coprocessor supports DES, 3DES, and AES, while the Hash coprocessor supports SHA-I and MD5.

Here is the answer from Lisa at Cellphonesoft :

Swiss Manager 1.3 - Memory reclaim settings

- Level 1: Tells the OS to compress memory. In UIQ2 this resulted in a lot of freed memory without closing any app, however it does just nothing in UIQ3. This level is included in the hope that some later firmware will enable it.

- Level 2: Restarts the built-in Task Manager which sometimes results in some extra free memory. (In SMP 1.00 this was the "aggressive" option.)

- Level 3: Closes SecurityApp (resulting in a device crash IF phone lock is enabled). Moreover, Level 3 allocates all available memory. The effect is that the operating system tells all running programs that memory became scarce. Most apps will react by closing themselves. Important: this method results in (almost) all apps being killed, even those excluded in SM, because it is done by the OS, not directly by SM, like in the case of the "End all tasks" command (which respects exclusions). Finally, the allocated memory is made available again by SM and the end-result can be some more available memory.

*Mine is set on Level2, works great! :)
