Sony Xperia Z1

Well after weeks of asking , I finally got a reply from Sony SA re the KitKat update for the Z1 , though it does not really give a timeframe as such , here is the answer I received :
"Hi ,thanks for the message . Android 4.4 KitKat is currently being tested and evaluated by the operators (Mobile Networks) and as soon as they conclude their evaluation and approve the update it will be released to consumers "
So as I said , not really much help , but at least we know its with the operators ,so I guess thats one step closer . I hope Vodacom do not take forever with it as Iv already received my update on my Samsung Note 3 today .

I think Vodacom were quite quick with the 4.3 update so I suspect the same with 4.4, but unfortunately I am with MTN and they took a while to release 4.3 after sony released.

Everyone else on the forum has the opposite experience. MTN is usually a few weeks ahead of Vodacom with updates. Probably because of all the customizing Vodacom does.

Hi all
Well iv had my Sony Z1 for all of 9 days and iv run into issues . It is my work phone and while I love the build ,the touch screen has started driving me nuts over the past 3 days . I first noticed when swiping on my keyboard , the touch sensitivity just goes haywire . I then run the diagnostic test and the same thing happens . Reboot the device and then its fine again until it starts up again , iv done a google search and it seems a very common issue , does anyone know of a fix ? I have installed No apps on the phone so its still stock as I got it 9 days back as this is my work device and use my Note 3 for personal use .
Ill more than likely take the phone back to Vodacom but from what iv read most times the phone gets sent back with Sony claiming there is no issue only for the problem to crop up again days later .
I have a feeling im in for an up hill battle with this one . Anyone had the same or similar issue on the Z1 ?
I have even done the whole reset thing to factory settings and started from scratch as well as check that the software is up to date , none of this has helped any . Im not prepared to accept that ill need to reboot the phone 2 or 3 times a day , not when the phone is new and most certainly not from a device like this which is meant to be the Flag Ship (well until the Z2 comes that is ).

If it is a common issue Sony will probably have an update for the phone out in a week. They are fast to fix common problems. That's if they haven't fixed it already.

Hmmm I had the same issue at the start. Just used plain typing when it happened then later returned to swiping, it worked itself out after a few days and hasn't happened again since. Perhaps try wiping the screen with a damp cloth once or twice? I took mine as a music player into the shower, the hot water might have helped I guess:D

Well iv just read a stack of issues over at various forums even over at Sony with Sony promising a fix in January already . Im not happy with this and im certainly not going to reboot my phone 5 or 6 times a day as I am continuously using swipe on my keyboard (Stock Keyboard) . So im off to Vodacom tomorrow and iv printed all the info as well as taken 6 videos of the issues to prove my case . Im rather annoyed with Sony that they could let a bug like this run since last year December already from when it was first reported . So im returning the Sony and do not want another , I know im in for a fight with Vodacom but so be it . I use this for work and e mailing etc etc and refuse to have to reboot and wait months for a fix . So im returning it and hopefully will get another device (non Sony) even if it means having to pay in a little extra every month for another note 3 .

Whatever you do, don't stay with Vodacom please?

Like I said though, I had the issue myself but it worked itself out in about a months time.

I could have maybe lived with having to reboot my phone once a week , but the past 3 days iv had to do it on average 5 or 6 times a day .It usually starts while im using the keyboard and therafter its all down hill as then even the browser does weird and wonderful things . Iv taken 6 videos of the diagnostic test today alone and they all came out the same with the touch screen failing . The thing is after a reboot it works just great for all of a couple of hours and then it will just start up . Its extremely Frustrating and I know that Vodacom are going to try and sell me on a repair or even a new unit ,but from what iv read this is an extensive problem and Sony are well aware of it as well . The one guy returned 4 units and every replacement he got (new out of the box) had exactly the same issue . I dont see why I should have to reboot the phone so often just to have it work as it should ,especially not a Flag Ship device .
Yeah im disapointed I love my Note 3 ,but thought I would try something different in the Sony ,but what it has ended up doing is just putting me off the Sony entirely especially the way Sony have been dragging the feet on a fix for this . I think what compounds the issue is there is alot of debate currently as to whether this is a software or indeed a hardware issue . Bottom line is Im not going to accept this ,especially since I use it for work and need something reliable . Its a pity ,I was enjoying the Camera thus far on it .

connect it to a PC and run all the possible updates.
I have never experienced this, and my phone is up to date. There have been a few updates since Oct.

Then see if the problem persists?
If then still problematic, take it back.

you do realise that your 9 day old phone was probably on the production line over december/january.

Update the phone first then see if the problem persists, else you could be a few days without a phone...

Hi All , thanks for all the replies . I have checked all the software updates - It was the first thing I did . I have even done a software repair as per the Sony help line . The phone is still new , still has the plastic on the back and has never even left the house as yet as I was waiting for the pouch to arrive . Further Sony have admitted to this being a worldwide issue to which there is currently no fix available . They were supposedly working on a fix but they have known about this issue World Wide since last year December .
There are literally thousands of complaints re this issue and the worrying thing is many have received replacement phones after taking their phones back for repairs countless times only for the replacements to do exactly the same thing . My understanding is that it effects people who are using the phone very frequently for messaging (using the swipe keyboard) like e mails etc , which I am . Honestly I am disappointed with Sony and I doubt ill ever wade back into the Sony waters again . What really gets me is that its an issue which is so common and world wide and still Sony have not issued a fix , starts making one worry that its more than just a software glitch and if im to use this phone for 2 years , well then im definitely Not going to keep on going through this .

Okay... The phone released at the end of last year, not January. But unfortunate to hear that you have been forced down the road, and I hope you'll have luck with your next purchase.

I'll be enjoying my purple Z1 though :D

:) You know I was busy correcting my post as your post was done . Yeah I meant to say Sony has known about this issue with their Z1 line since last year December ,but iv corrected my post now :)

No problems on my V but not using standard keyboard, used to disappear while busy typing.

Hope you get sorted, seems very frustrating

does it do it when using the 'swype' functionality on SwiftKey as well?

Yes. It's a screen related issue, kinda loses track of the finger for a split second and that leads to your swipe being cut short and multiple keys pressed as you pass them

Hi there , I cannot comment on using swiftkey as I have not installed any apps as yet on the phone . I did think of installing Swiftkey , but then I thought to myself why should I if its a fault with the handset . Further I don't think that would actually help matters because this is not only a keyboard issue but rather a touch screen issue as the same problem occurs even when using the browser and trying to pinch and zoom or even scrolling . Granted not as often ,but having said that I also have not used the browser as extensively as the messaging .The frustrating thing is that it happens at random , so you can be swiping away during a message look up at the screen only to see utter garbage because the touch screen has gone again and only certain things have been picked up . The self Diagnosis section under settings also confirms this . I ran the test 17 times yesterday with it failing 12 times ! and had similar results the day before that . So very frustrating and honestly the Sony Customer services were of No help at all . What I do not understand is how with an issue this common in the Z1 world wide just why Sony have not released a fix for it by now , I mean they have admittedly been aware of the problem since last year December !
I know im in for a fight with Vodacom(one which I may well loose) ,but im really not happy with this device at all and after reading that it is such a common issue ,well I don't even want a replacement . I either want the contract cancelled or a different handset from a different manufacturer . So im off to Vodacom later with the Videos iv taken , the screen shots and iv printed stuff from the Sony Forums where Sony admit to the issue etc .

If it's failing the self diagnostic, return it.

Not worth the aggravation

Does your screen issue stop you using paragraphs?
