"Sorry another client is using it all"

LOL!!!!!
YOU BASTARD!
No, i was pissed off in post 1, My gf told me to stfu and she's right, you are just using what you are paying for.
But are you really one of the folks in eversdal? I would like to chat about the performance issues, with uncapped you shouldn't see much of a drop. Im on unshaped uncapped, costing me a leg, and here are some things that makes it worth it:
1. youtube buffers every 5 seconds
2. 96kbps radio streams buffer every 4 seconds
3. telkom.co.za takes 50 seconds to load
4. etc

I must however buy you a beer for this post! rofl.
what can we do :)

Maybe I am expecting too much from 384kbps, but I could swear that it wasn't like this...

Guy, PM me!

Update:
telkom (riaan, nice ou) did indeed call today, and promised to have someone call me during the next day... *cross fingers*

I appreciate the guy's assistance on this, but that email doesn't say much... Maybe I will call and ask them to tell me exactly what the problem is.

If he knew exactly what the problem was, he'd have fixed it by now :-)

Are you on a business package? As a residential customer, the Telkom Call centre REFUSES to communicate via email!

Negative, this is just the result of finding a nice helpful person, and presenting them with the facts, and the logs some doofii previously said a telkom employee won't "hand over"...
I appreciate this guys support, even though we had to obtain it after a lot of problems. I still doubt this problem will be fixed soon, I still have the impression that telkom feels a flying f&&^ about residential clients, as long as we pay them. At least I have a reference number, and and someone to ask, and I am doing this on behalf of everyone on the dslam...
I will still keep posted, but up to now, no news as of yet, no repairs, no changes.

Im having the exact same problem with my line. I live in Durban and use WebAfrica. Raised the problem with both Telkom and WA. Telkom came back and said they can't find a problem. WA says that because their servers are based in CT, my ping and speeds will be *** (sounds like bs to me as it only happens after hours).

Yes, the only positive advice I can give, is give up... you're only paying telkom, expecting service matching the payments is quite unfair :)

Dude, you on 384k. What do you expect from that even though you uncapped and unshaped. that is not true broadband. Go 4MB and nothing less, otherwise tell Telscum to go fak themselves. Seriously if i pay about R500 or more i want decent internet speeds. I would rather join the wug and go wireless.

Telscum have been raping you all these years and are doing it to you still. Too pay them twice for line and adsl rental is a complete joke. Life is already so damn expensive and we have to pay so much just for browsing the net. In other damn countries its free. Why don't we boycott these suckers or do something. Maybe we really need to hurt them in some way that will change their minds and attitudes. Steal all there bloody cables or burn or bomb all their offices just to let them know that we Saffers are serious about the issue and not just moan about it.

:(:(:(

and as soon as these DSLAM issues is being fixed what will happen...you will have great connection speeds for the next 6 months and then back to square one as they just oversell it again and again and again...

It all boils down to money...as long as you pay for mediocre service why will there be changes made or upgrades done...

I have exactly the same problem and I know for a fact that the DSLAM I work from as +-500 services configured on it and it has only 7 x 2mb/s ATM circuits providing it with bandwidth for all these users. Luckily it is coming to an end now as they are upgrading the equipment at the exchange to provide much more bandwidth...so hopefully after the upgrade "Happy days for a few moths again".

I hope so AcidT.
StevieG, I am on CTWUG, but im not a fan of p2p, I just want my latencies to NOT be 800ms after 6pm, so I can play games, use ssh and browse the web.
Accessing my email last night on gmail was imposisble, it didnt even load. I don't think having 384 adsl is too blame :/
But anyway, my migration from telkom to mweb controlling the line, is going through today, hopefully the added pressure will make telkom see the importance of upgrading the dslam quicker.
Thanks for collaborating guys :-)

This is what we got from telkom...
The whole area, on the same DSLAM i assume, have been experiencing major issues since about january (Eversdal Primary school area and surrounds)...

After a long fight with people at telkom who do not know anything about the technical side of ADSL or what a DSLAM is, we finally managed to get through to a guy who does, a very nice chap...

Anyway, since we explained the issue that our dsl basically drops off to unusable levels, especially over weekends and after hours, the logs and facts came out...
The DSLAM is overutilised, and telkom has zero-idea when they can upgrade it.

Why is it over utilised? Well one or more users (on the logs) are downloading 600 GB + per month, and saturating the DSLAM's capabilities.

Where does this leave the rest of us in the area?
Shouldn't we demand they upgrade it, so that we can get what we pay for, or at least be able to use the internet normally? (I couldn't even log a fault on telkom.co.za, thats how slow it is)...
Or maybe people should stop downloading the damn internet like a bunch of criminals?

I don't know, this situation sounds quite unacceptable, and I don't even have the balls to try and start a fight with telkom. They won't care, and won't give us jack.

Why are a couple of users able to DL 600GB/mo each while you're not able to achieve anything? Does the DSLAM give them priority ahead of you?

It is highly unikely that the DSLAM in the exchange is "over-contended" and even if it were, then all the users on that DSLAM would have their services degraded proportionally. So your "heavy" users' services would also be downgraded to the claimed "unusable" levels.

Why are a couple of users able to DL 600GB/mo each while you're not able to achieve anything? Does the DSLAM give them priority ahead of you?

Hi PeterCH, see my previous reply... the answer is NO, it does not give anyone priority.

Hi PeterCH, see my previous reply... the answer is NO, it does not give anyone priority.

I just read what you said earlier. Yeah it would make no sense for 1 user to kill the connection for everyone else unless his connection was just as bad too.

This is one of the reasons why woolly T&Cs and arguments about "fair" usage etc only hurt the consumer. How do you actually know when you are being shafted and how do you build a technically legitimate complaint when service is subpar?

If you do tracert you will see the problem is with the dslam.
For example if you gaming on the european battlenet server (Blizzard) do a
tracert europe.battle.net
You will see the first hop should be about 20ms under normal load.
The first hop where i stay goes to 800ms during peak hours. This is because telkom overload the DSLAM in your area. I do the same trace route at work in braamfontein where the infrastructure has to be good because of the businesses it never goes above 18ms for the first hop with my same ADSL account. It is not your ISP it is TELKOM if the ping is high on the first two hops.
See below (at work on my adsl account)

1 13 ms 14 ms 14 ms dsl-185-71-1.dynamic.wa.co.za [41.185.71.1]
2 72 ms 42 ms 39 ms vl105.cr.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [196.220.59.250]
3 43 ms 41 ms 42 ms vl33.er.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [41.185.0.30]
4 39 ms 39 ms 43 ms upstream.vl102.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [196.220.59.23

Sunday 7:08 at home (Quellerina same adsl account)

Tracing route to europe.battle.net [213.248.106.200]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 433 ms 419 ms 397 ms dsl-185-74-1.dynamic.wa.co.za [41.185.74.1]
2 476 ms 425 ms 424 ms vl108.cr.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [196.220.59.238]
3 609 ms 644 ms 532 ms vl32.er.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [41.185.0.26]
4 454 ms 352 ms 308 ms upstream.vl101.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [196.220.59.22

Telkom need to upgrade there local existing infrastructure and they are not doing this. Im trying to get them to upgrade my dslam in Quellerina but they just don't seem to care.
When they start releasing 8mb lines this will get even worse. If you a gamer this is unplayable. What happened to contention ratios ?

Agreed man - same boat here still. Basically tried everything now just cant come right with them. Apparently the exchange I'm on (Heuweloord exchange in Centurion) is a "mobile exchange". I.e. its run out of a shipping container. I've had DSL for 4years or so now... why its run out of a container only some retard at Telkom will know.

After being told "too bad" by a Senior Telkom tech I've migrated to Web Africa with the vague hopes they can pressure Telkom to do something.
Also - logged a complaint with ICASA about this. Really not sure what to do beyond this - the situation is idiotic.

Whats more disturbing, the same issues I saw last year before the problem became extreme I am seeing with many of my friends who I game with. Just feels like Telkom are pocketing the monthly cash and doing zero infrastructure upgrades.

Oi all this is so familiar to me. I've been having the same issues, although not quite as bad as the OP's speed degradation. I have also reached the "The problem is on the DSLM" bit, and can't get further. No resolution in sight. mbvdl, please keep us updated about your transferring to MWEB. It would be interesting to see if they can actually action some change.

Yes I agree Fbman. It is just going to get worse when they start offering faster speeds I.E. 10mb for each user.
