Everyone needs internet nowadays. I won't be able to pay my bills or do banking etc. without it. Wether you have DStv or not you still need to pay for internet / data.

Internet connectivity is essential for everyone, regardless of whether they use Netflix or not. Data costs should not be factored in.

Yes but We only needed cheap 10-20Gb internet packages for our needs, before we got Netflix etc. I know many people with DSTV that only have these cheap internet packages as they never watch YouTube or Netflix.

It's a "spoiltness" as well - demanding everything must be in 4K.... 720p was good enough for me before, still is.

Agree with both to a degree.
What data option/package would I have gone for if I did not want to do any streaming (as in all my tv needs comes via DSTV satellite) . Streaming is data hungry. I maybe could have gone for a 50 to 100 GB pm LTE/5G package at R200-R300 odd pm. But because I am streaming, I need an uncapped or high data volumes package, like fibre. So for me the data cost is roughly R300 per month for streaming purposes.

Openview is close to reaching the 4 million mark I wouldn't be surprised if they had more consumers than DStv eventually but you'd have to treat those decoders like aerial and in hindsight eMedia Investments may not make that much income either way or to their liking.

I was on "uncapped" before streaming came along, and now with streaming data usage doubled.

My choice is unlimited with streaming.

DSTV gets to dictate, and limit, what my choices are if I stick to them.

I skip, being able to watch, what I want, when I want, on my schedule, no one else's, wins for me.

Data costs are irrelevant for those of us who would have a proper internet connection whether Netflix existed or not...
 
DStv works well enough for those who are more easily satisfied, or catered for by the service.
Streaming still scares a lot of people.

I sort of use both, but mostly download rather than stream (that forced if need be).

Black Friday is the perfect time to hunt for great deals! I remember scoring a 600GB deal last year for only R320 per month—more than sufficient for all my streaming needs.

Internet is an utility - water, electricity and internet.

Whether I have netflix or not, showmax or not, I will still have uncapped internet. Therefor most people remove the cost of internet when comparing. They will still have internet, whether or not they use a streaming service.
 
Price is one reason people leave. Here some more:

Charges for addon's. I had to pay for extra view and just because I have a decoder that can record (which I did not use anyway) another extra.

Crap expensive hardware that needs replacement every 2 years or when they decide

Atrocious customer service. You spend hours on the line with incompetent support staff.

Inflexible packages. I changed my package, and they just cut me off, so I stayed off.

Not sure on the 2 year old hardware, I've got an Explora 1 that's 10 years old and an explora 2 that's 6 years old. Extra view and the PVR fee are the same, if you pay one you get both, it's sadly a stupid rights thing.

I still use a DualView sometimes, over 20 years since release now. And found a way to use the SD PVR again. But many people used to complain about decoder failures so does seem to be a thing.
