South Africa's school maths shocker

Thank goodness they didn't break up the results according to race.
If the numbers discriminate against Afrikaners then poor Pietie is gonna get a hurting.
If it discriminates against ANC voters then maths is going to be decolonized.

So what is the truth? because it is not in the OP. Wake me up when there is an article about black children who struggle with mathematics and the impact of major cultural hurdles in black communities on their education.

The Chinese are not destroying their education system because there are some non-smart chinese people.

Not genes, more likely the delivery mechanism ie: ability to teach such subjects. Even when I was back in school looooooong ago, a good maths teacher could make or break a class. My parents even through a fit once with my backing, I was struggling with maths at one point going into matric and they dropped my whole level of subjects ( teacher quality I mean, not grade). Back then we had classes graded per subject based on marks ie: English A B C, Maths A B C ) and the school decided that I must attend Maths D class and bring down my other subjects ( English to D ) as well even though I was performing English @ 90% averages. So yes, teacher quality is a big issue and even then, you would think the struggling classes would get the better teachers but in actuality, it was the other way round. This was pre CAPS and OBE.

Grade 1s getting homework is always a bad sign.
 
How does this compare to the 70s or 80s? I'm curious to know how much worse it is. Comparing just two years doesn't make for much of a trend.

Taxes are basic arithmetic. Beyond that there are some rules about which numbers go where, but those rules aren't fixed. Besides which going over the current rules for the ordinary working person should take no more than a couple of lessons and they'd be done right near the end of the schooling.

But sometimes they did put those getting higher marks with worse teachers. Maybe they weren't even aware of how bad those teachers were. Looking back I can't understand why they were hired or kept their jobs, although I think when I was at school parents were much more hands off. I think it was always assumed to be the pupil's fault never the teachers and even when it was clearly the teacher's fault parents were reluctant to interfere or speak up.

Mathematics is a subject that cannot tolerate a poor teacher, because one inadequately taught year, especially at secondary level, can leave a huge hole that undermines everything from then on.

Small for now but:

English , half a page
Maths, half a page
Because of special needs Speech\OT therapy - Three pages.

English and Maths daily, therapy homework across two to three days depending on the next session.

It's not terrible and the idea is to make it fun and incorporate it into every day things, not just sit down and work ie: increase vocab with use, spelling, counting and arithmetic.

That's why, if this is being followed by both teachers and parents, the failure at school levels is shocking.

That's some deeply ingrained self-hatred you have there coming to the fore. I already specified why this is the case, but your self-pity must have glanced right over the obvious right in front of you.

Hint: It wasn't genes Mr 30% reading comprehension.

And Stephen here is a good example of why I don't see the black populous turning it around anytime soon. Man, the majority seem incapable of escaping the past. Comments like these make it so obvious that black people themselves still believe they are inferior. Bummer.
