Is this the reason why the ANC has destroyed the education system? Socio-economic issues?
The Chinese are not destroying their education system because there are some non-smart chinese people.
Of the 1.2 million Grade 1 learners which started school in 2005, only 55,000 passed Mathematics in matric in 2017 with a pass mark of over 50%.
In 2018, this number fell by a further 5,000, which means that only 50,000 matriculants passed Mathematics with a mark of over 50%
But who cares about facts? Nothing is as boring as facts. What BS stats reporting is this? We know 2005 1.2 million started school and only 55000 passed, but you don't even mention how many started school in 2006, for all we know there was 5000 less pupils. I mean I know there probably wasn't, but for heavens sake. Don't make conclusions for us, give us the facts and let us draw our own.
Who cares about maths marks.
81% matric pass rate, highest ever! w00t
Who cares about Math? You can Google the answer to anything. Amazing world we live in, you don't actually even need an education. Street smarts is all you need.
81% did so we are good? The others can work for the 81%.I really hope that you are being sarcastic because if anyone cannot atleast get 30% to pass matric, they are completely useless.
Shocking..... Not.
That being said, I'm impressed with the homework grade 1 kids are expected to do, don't recall doing that much, really makes me tend to suspect that it's not the curriculum that's an issue.
South Africa's maths shocker

This means that less than 5% of learners who start Grade 1 achieve a good pass mark in Mathematics 12 years later.

Is it the teachers?I am a teacher (not maths). Trust me it is not the curriculum.
Imagine Oom Jan never pitched. "Maths" would stop at "Joh, the cows are too much".
Is it the teachers?
/Runs.......
I know a few good mather teachers.....and some got poached by top non-governement schools and earn accordingly, and by accordingly, I mean very well.Tongue in cheek I would say yes. Good maths teachers are hard to come by, even in private or the old model C schools. Most folks who have a mathematical bent have far more lucrative career opportunities than teaching ( no offense ). Its a really big problem, compounded by the expectation that government thinks anyone can teach or learn mathematics.
I agree. Failed first term maths on HG in Grade 12. Moved to SG and got 80%. N3 maths got 100% in most tests.I have elevenity hunderd cows. But seriously I did extremely well in maths in primary school after that marks dropped about 20- 30% and that was due to me and having horrible math teachers in high school. They would simply ramble off the explanation especially more complex things and then leave you to your own devices.
If you were to ask a question or didnt understand some thing you were treated like shyte and a retard.Honestly math teachers in this country sucks.
scraped through on my ass, so fu math teachers you suck
