Spark plugs changing

Good day guys,

I have a quick question directed to mechanics and people who knows more about vehicles.
I want to know, is it always a fact that every time you are doing your car maintenance you must change the spark plugs or spark plugs are to be changed after a certain period, say 60 000 km?

I have heard that if you do a major service on the car which include spark plugs changing then you must skip spark plugs changing for the following 3 or 4 minor service intervals.

You can find the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual. It will list the intervals, like 60,000km or whatever for spark plugs. It also depends on the type of plugs currently fitted. Iridium plugs for example are good for about 100,000km.

Like above it depends on the plugs and the car. Either way I would suggest taking out the plugs to inspect them, set the gap correctly with every service and then replacing as needed.

With leaded fuel yonks ago plugs got fouled, hence every service replace. Nowadays plugs last lot longer due to a cleaner burn so to speak.

Most new cars stipulates what needs to be done at what mileage. But spark plugs are cheap, I don't see a reason not to change them when you do a service.

Best to consult owners manual as every car is different to another.
If the car does not use the fancy expensive Platinum/ Iridium plugs then best to change them every 2nd service @30 000km.

My Auris also uses Iridium plus which i will be replacing on my coming up service as they are due.
3 years ago, i paid R600 for a set and i know that it should be more as spares parts now prices have up.

My first car, a Nissan Langley ...... well simply couldnt afford too much back then.

Plugs - would pull them out, give them a once over wire brush, waterpaper the electrodes - borrow some feelers, re gap and that was that. When the car started missing ..... was time to fork out.

But as @Jewpacabra says - 60 000 or so, not a bad idea to pop in new suckers.

Having said this - I have been driving diesel for the past 30 odd years. Could never find the spark plugs

My spark plug is only at the dealer.
One thing is a fact, with these new long service spark plugs, they tend to "rust" sit tight when removing them.

I know for a normal old car you get good and cheap rubbish plugs.

On my opel, the dealer fasten them once so much, I had to go and buy a decent sparkplug socket to get them out.
Some guys add some copper compound when fasten them, but champion say no, don't do it.

Yeah, good point, those do last much longer than normal plugs, that's why reading the manual is a very good idea to know which plugs your car uses and the frequency of changing them.

There's absolutely no reason to tighten them that much, must be the same buffoons who tighten the oil filter so much that it seizes on and shakes the whole engine when you are trying to undo it.

I change my spark plugs on the Golf 6 GTI annually when I do my service, I know its a waste but plugs are not that expensive.
My daily is a diesel so no plugs there except for glow plugs but that needs to be changed every 160 000km

If you change them frequently you could probably get away with using a like for like but made of cheaper materials. AFAIK the only advantage to using iridium plugs is that it lasts longer. So pay R300 per plug and change them every 75000km or pay R30 per plug and change them every 15000km.

Worked for me, but I also didn't see the old oil filter gasket stay behind once after changing it and ran the car without oil for about 10 minutes. So what do I know.
