Fring FTW!!!

Fring does Skype on Symbian and Pocket PC better than Skype does Skype if you know what I mean.

The Skype for Symbian (beta) client charges for incoming calls, Fring allows you to bypass that charge.

The Skype for Pocket PC client insists on using the back speaker (at least on the HP and HTC models, I think it is on all Windows Mobile systems) when you make calls, which is crazy. You have to use a headset to get around that.

But Fring bypasses all those limits... AND it also lets you log in to Google Talk, MSN, Skype, ICQ and a host of other clients ... all at the same time!

It is a lifesaver... a genuine killer-app!

The only downside is that the Fring codec tends to make the voice calls a little soft (low in volume) which can be a bit irritating.
 
This uses VOIP right? How long before Vodacom and MTN starts to charge you R25 a meg? The last time I looked (which was quite a log time ago) MTN and Vodacom didn’t like VOIP on there network much. Remember this: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=56878
Think it’s only a matter of time until the operators pulls out the guns on this one.

Vodacom has publically stated they won't AFAIK.
 
Actually you can speak for "free" using fring. how it works is you have to be on fring & the person you want to talk to has to be as well (in network) but for this to work you have to register with a voip provider who allows free in network calling or at least unlimited in network calling for a small monthly fee.
 
installed it on my old 6680 for my brother who does end of line marketing type of business. Most of his calls are to his suppliers who are mostly on landlines. He used to spend R300/week on prepaid, now, its been four days and he has only used a little under 2 Euros on VoipBuster.com.

He is very happy.

This rumour has been going around for years now... and all because MTN and Vodacom simply reserved the right when they filed tariff plans with ICASA to charge separate VOIP rates. Neither of them have ever given any indication of actually implementing such rates and it would be tariff suicide to actually do so since nobody else in the world is so stupid. Even if they were so insane as to think of actually doing this, they would give fair warning. People would then drop them like flies.

so put the rumour to rest and start chatting... ;)
 
The savings when using Fring are actually dependent on who you call:

I am on MTN Zone prepaid for example, and I pay R2.89/min (max) for a call to a cellphone in SA. If I used Fring and pay the Skypeout Rate, I will pay R2.78/min.

Calls to a landline in SA would offer me substantial savings as I am charged R2.89/min when using MTN's network, and only R0.81 when using Fring's gateway to Skype.

Although Fring-to-Fring calls are 'free' if you leave the data usage out of the equation, I have found that most phones do not yet multitask that well. This also means that the person who you will be calling through Fring must have it running in the background on his/her phone permanently, which incur additional data charges and demands more power from the battery which means more frequent recharges.

The other drawback of using Fring (although Fring cannot be blamed for this) is that as you move about the coverage area of the network and the service disconnects and reconnects, your contacts are bombarded with login notifications.

Does one need to download skype as well onto their cell or do you just use your normal skype username & Password on the fring prompt.?
 
Has anyone been able to use fring or yeigo or other package with a regular sip account, like one from www.internetcalls.com? What about posting some setup tips for us wanting to try it...

There are two on there that offer unlimited free calls to SA landlines and one that offers cell phone calls at 62c per minute. www.voipraider.com is one - the only cost involved is $10 per 120 days. AND you can use that money to call cellphones / SMS. Now to kick telkom into touch and use the phone for incoming only.

I think it's time to look out for a nice piece of pay once off sip hardware. Anyone know of any good deals out there?
 
Does anyone here make alot of voip calls from an MTN handset? Is it rumour or fact that they charge R25 per mb for voip data :/
