Wow.

That's special. Not only on a red line but facing the wrong direction.

There is a thread on slackers.co.za dedicated to "park like a ****" - add it there!

Think its the right direction as that street is a one way and cars can park anyway. I don't know why all the cars in Stellenbosch does that.

This is South Africa - people park where they want to and how they want to. Red, yellow lines, parking meters etc all means nothing. 99% of the time he will get away without a fine.

This is Stellenbosch, everyone knows there's not enough parking. They probably just popped into the Checkers across the road ;)

I'm not saying it's an excuse to park illegally.

Yes, could have been Checkers or St. Elmos - but I walk past St. Elmos and there was no one and I was in Checkers for a good 10 minutes and the Audi was there the whole time. There were plenty of other parking spaces available, I found one without any trouble.

My guess is someone went to Mugg and Bean and did not want to walk too far (parking behind Checkers) and did not want to pay for parking. From M&B they can keep an eye on their [-]dull[/-] sexy car.

Is there a law that states you must park in the right direction?

Why does direction matter when you park?

It matters for Opel drivers, so that they don't push their cars into oncoming traffic when it breaks down.

Haha, no but seriously. I was in Cape Town a few months back and I parked across the street, facing oncoming traffic. The locals flipped out on me.

I was perfectly in the parking bay however, better parked than the other people around, the only problem being the direction I faced.

I don't remember it being a traffic violation to park facing the wrong way, but those locals told me: "You will get a ticket"...

Coming from Guateng it seemed strange that it should matter.

It is illegal to park facing oncoming traffic. I assume it's a safety issue.

I believe this law covers it:

No person shall park a vehicle on the roadway of a public road within an urban area:

...

With the outside of the left-hand wheels more than 450 mm from the curb or road way edge or if it is a one-way, with the right-hand wheels more than 450 mm from the edge or curb except when parking is otherwise permitted by a specific sign or road marking.

From that source, it is actually this rule:

STOPPING OF VEHICLES
Except to avoid an accident or complying with a road traffic sign or with an order given by a traffic officer, or for any cause beyond the control of the driver, you may not stop a vehicle at the following spots
...
On the right-hand side of such roadway facing oncoming traffic.
