Did the dbn to jhb drive on the N3 recently. Most fixed cameras appeared to be vandalised or not working, not sure if this is so or if I was just going too fast to see properly.

Also, how exactly does average speed monitoring/prosecution work?

If you slowdown considerably at both the start and end cameras, won't it give a false average.... Or does it monitor the time taken between the two points?

It monitors the time taken, and calculates an average speed from that.... slowing down at the start and end don't achieve anything really.
Always fsck off funny watching people do just that, and you know that they get a lekker ticket for their efforts anyway.

The cameras from JHB to KZN don't work (vandalized). But the ones in KZN definitely do - you can tell them apart, as they look like black square cameras. I have received many average speed fines there. It calculates how long it takes you to drive between each camera and works out your average speed. Slowly down does nothing.

Do you also get a 5km/h grace with the average speed camera. E.g. Normal camera if you 124km/h in a 120km/h zone, you dont get a fine. Does the same apply with the Average speed cameras?

Ja well, it's fines for me then. To think that I actually thought I was being smart by doing that

This made me remember what happened to a colleague some years ago. I think it happened in Italy, but may be mistaken about exactly where in Europe. In any case, he went through a toll gate and paid the fees. Further down the highway he then encountered another toll booth where he stopped to pay the applicable fee. But as a bonus, he also got a fine for a speeding infringement that he had to pay at the toll booth. He queried this and was informed that according to their monitoring system, he left the previous toll gate at time xx:xx and it now time yy:yy. Therefore, based on the distance to the previous toll gate and the time he took to reach the next toll gate, he could only have done so if his average speed was more than the speed limit of that particular section of the highway. (Speed = Distance / Time) And apparently the fine was quite hefty!:D

Not true. Just slow down enough for the average to be lower than the limit by the time you pass the second camera. Or stop for a pee at the side of the road.

A stop on the side of the road for a pee might do it for some guys without a doubt, but slowing down at either camera is generally not going to get the average down far enough.

But I'm generally also not referring to the guys who will speed over a small section of the "speed checking zone" but can slow down just a bit for the last half and be below the average... I'm talking about guys who slow down to the speed limit at the first camera, then fsck off like a stabbed rat and then slow down to the speed limit for the second camera.

I know exactly what you mean.
