Speed test...

Not too bad right now:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 3.843 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 1061.7 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 130.1 (kiloBytes/second)

I'm in the rondebosch area (southern suburbs).
How the hell do you get such fast internet!

Yep yep.. Speeds are most definetely looking much better!

Results:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

That is not one of the best speeds I get, but not too bad for tonight.

You are probably on tower West_Lodge_Dorsic_House_1 which should be fast.

I am on the Culmwood_Gardens_2 tower.

How far are you from the tower? From what I can see you should be in the dark green area.

Unfortunately I am just NW of the dark green area. (curses)
Do u think they will make another tower to fill in the gaps?

Ok then I guess you could try an antenna which could improve your connection.
Since your cousin is a reseller ask him if you could borrow an antenna for testing.

Not too sure if wbs will be putting up any new towers in CT soon, as they seem to be having bigger headaches in jhb right now. :eek:

I'm about 1km from Culmwood tower and high up which could explain my strong signal. :D

You could try moving the modem around in your room and try different spots to find the sweet spot. Doubt if you will reach 1mbps but it could improve a bit.

I'm in the process of putting an antenna up at the moment.
It's connected but not on the roof yet!
I mean, even Langa has better signal than where i am. Christ!

From the small amount of dark green area around Dorsic tower I'd say there must be a lot of obstructions in the way, but in general most areas I have tested my modem seem to be ok so far.

Try using FlashGet or another DL manager where you can multithread with as that should improve your DL speeds quite alot.

Whats your secret ??? ... and dont tell me you live in a treehouse installed on top of an iBurst tower! :p

ROFL, nah. Actually I live 10km from base and according to WBS there is no way i will ever get signal. Been prooving them wrong since October last year.

Honestly I am just lucky I guess, I have partial LOS to the tower and I use forest hill tower which is not too congested.

Other than that its a matter of finding the "sweet spot" and praying. Although the external antenna makes a HUGE difference.

I'm 9.5km from tower and 1M stable connection. With antenna on the roof. On the WBS map it is white spot.

hehe, goes to show that they could not even calculate their coverage correctly, Eveything around me is white for a good 2km. But as you can see I have very few speed problems.

A little further up at a mates place which is green on the map we cannot even hold a connection for 2 minutes.

Seems like having a bit of distance from a tower actually helps. Maybe that variable power thing with the UTD ... i.e. mine scales back cos I'm close?

I'm only about 4-5Km from Kyalami (Castle) with LOS. Got external WBS/Webb Industries antenna (mounted outside) .... and I dream of your speeds.

My cost fluctuates -62 to -67. alchamy have you checked the cost (& variance) of your best tower?

Going by the last few posts there seems to be no pattern as far as distance goes, as I am +_1km from the tower and get high speeds amoungst the best of those on this forum.

I am upstairs which could maybe make a difference though and no ext. antenna.

Maybe some others could post their distance and what sort of speeds they get, and whether they have an ext. antenna etc.

Ja ... didnt really think it made that much difference.

2 all the 1 meg steadies ...

To achieve 1 mbps sustained, besides having an un-congested tower, I also assume you must be running vitually zero frame errors. Can anyone using USB verify that your getting almost 0% FER% whilst transfering at 1mbps steady.

My connection can definately reach 1mbps, but it can only stay there for 1-2 secs. Drop in throughput sorta correlates with FER%, so if I can reduce FER% I may get to 1 meg steady too.

2 GRES

You've told me yourself I have a VERY stong signal ... -62 to -67 dB. So is FER% related to some sort of interference? Is the variance in dB any indication of frame corruption?

Also is there any way similar to rfScan to see FER% in the UTD console?

my frame error rate can pop to 15% whiloe downloading at 1mbit
Been trying to mull this over and something doesnt add up?

According to the Aussie FAQ (maybe outdated?), the max theoretical throughput is 1059kbps (3 x 353kbps timeslots on tower). Now if your getting occasional spikes of 15% FER that would mean at times 15% of frames need to be re-sent (at least once).

Assuming an ave. distribution of frame sizes re-sent this would mean at times your throughput is 1059 - 15% = 900. To maintain 1024 Kbps you connection would have to statistically maintain max speed of 1059 almost all of the time to catch up the deficit of the times it drops to 1023 - 900.

I'm also guessing the 1059 Kbps is raw throughput, making IP payload a bit less (after removing radio framing headers).

Any ideas?

i know thats what kyoceras site says but ive seen speeds over that, and im reading the speed from the iburst terminal, 1100 and above i'm talking about here. People have had speeds over 132 before on the forums and posted screenies and iburst in aus apparantly modded something and were going to/are offering 2mbit, so... i dont know

Your line speed is approximately 473 Kbps or 58 kBytes/sec
I'm in kempton park about 7km away from the tower....
