um, just a silly question... haven't seen much of it on here

When is Telkom upgrading the speed of our DSL lines? I heard my 512k will go up to 1mb? Wicked :D

And is this across the board entirely or only selected few?

1st June 2010 across the board

And 512k to 1Mb has not been confirmed yet so don't get too excited.

Not really? Surely they can throttle you to 384k and so on even if the line speed is greater than the package. I know MWEB does that...

What he means is that if Telkom raises the speeds, then the ISPs will have to re-look at their offerings. Yes, they can throttle you to a speed lower than your line speed, but they will have to offer packages based on the higher line speeds, e.g. up to 10mbps.

Yip, that's the one. What is the point of offering a 384k service if the slowest line speed is 1Mb or 512k. They'd need to come to the party :)

Well, i won't say no :D doubt anyone will. go Telkom go.... *waits for June 1st*

I rate ISP's will also have to start offering packages in between 4 - 10mbps, eg 5mbps, 6mbps, 8mbps etc... Some users will have a 10mb line but wont want to have 4mb uncapped. They will want faster speeds, but they wont be able to afford 10mbps uncapped, so they will settle for one of the in between accounts. Unless of course ISP's are gonna surprise us all with a 10mbs uncapped for R500 account :)

I think they may keep the the uncapped speed offerings at 4mbit and intro a 8/10mbit accounts for people who may not be able to afford the higher cost uncapped packages.
If everything rings true then Telkom will supposedly be giving us bigger caps, but then again Telkoms definition of large caps is 5gigs.

Had a Telkom ADSL specialist - one of those with the fancy meters - at my home a week or so ago.

He's not real enthusiastic about Telkom's lines actually delivering the new upgraded speeds

I had one of those Telkom techies come to my home to see why my line connection kept breaking off, you know the ones that have those flashy gadgets and all. He did not even know what a modem was? These guys are outsourced contractors, and they have no idea what is going on. Having said that, I do not think Telkom is going to do anything until 1 August 2010--this date has been their usual "upgrade" package introduction time.

One of the most important reason behind this expected upgrade was FIFA World Cup and I have been told that the speed upgrade is imminent at this point and not later than 1 June.

I think we are in for a HUGE disappointment come 1 June 2010. We are ALL hoping for those long awaiting speed upgrades, but i think this will only happen some time after the SWC, Q3 or even Q4. Telkom will have an excuse for not delivering. If 1 June 2010 comes, and i can phone to get my 4MB upgraded, I will strip down bear naked and streak on 12 June 2010 when SA vs France, @ Newlands!!!!

P.S imminent = swear word on mybb, lol

One of the consultants said they "Might" be increasing there current capped offering as well, because she "accidentally" recommended a 20GB capped account

i'm probably dreaming but i'm hoping they bump the 318 up to 1mb :D but i'll be happy if its bumped to 512 as well :D
