Johannesburg - A speeding motorcyclist killed a traffic officer on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, the department of transport said.

Spokesperson Logan Maistry said according to KwaZulu-Natal Traffic Authorities, principal provincial Inspector (PPI) Ashrina Ramklown, 33, was knocked and killed whist trying to stop a speeding motorcyclist on the N3 near Midmar Dam, outside Pietermaritzburg.

The motorcyclist also died as a result of the crash. "We want to convey condolences to the family and colleagues of PPI Ashrina Ramklown, who was senselessly knocked and killed by a speeding motorcyclist in KwaZulu-Natal earlier today [Saturday]. Our thought and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments," said Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

He said called for tougher punishment for road users who continue to display a blatant disregard for road rules and traffic officers.

Traffic cops really need to stop jumping out infront of traffic unless they can emit force-fields from their palms.

What about condolences to the family of the motorcyclist who also died because a cop jumped in front of him?

1. Biker was stupid for speeding.

2. Cop was stupid for jumping in front of said speeding biker.

Use a little bit of common sense and either trap the person or get his number plate or get into a car and chase him. Idiots.

Well what else should they do? Just let speeding motorists pass by and be a danger to other vehicles on the road?

I've never seen a cop jump out on a stretch of road that you would not be able to stop on. The biker obviously wasnt paying attention, hence it was entirely his fault.

I'm just waiting to see how long it is before one of the Jozi porkers gets killed running across the highway to set up their photo shoot for the day

They might want to review procedures. How does trying to physically stop a speeding biker show a regard for safety? What tougher punishment could there be than causing the biker's death?

if you weren't an eye witness, don't make assumptions

The biker caused his own death.

Don't know if you read my whole post but I gave other possible things they could have done where they would most likely both be alive today.

Be my guest and jump in front of any speeding vehicles but don't so naive as to think you aren't risking your life each time you do so, which is exactly what this cop did.

EDIT: Oh, btw just reread the bolded part and think about that a little...

While I agree that speeding is irresponsible, running into the road and doing your best Jesus impersonation to stop someone speeding is just stupid... Even at 120km/h you're covering 33 meters every second... The biker needs a second or two to react, the officer needs a second or two to get out of the way and all of this is happening while the distance between the two is closing really, really quickly.
In my youth, I was pulled over like that and I finally managed to stop the bike about 50 or 60 meters after I'd passed the officer... That was from about 140 or 150 in a 120 zone, there were oncoming cars in the opposite lane and the gap that was left for me to miss the cop was so tiny that I'm pretty sure a drop of pee came out as I took it... Just one drop mind you.

EDIT: Forgot to add.. Soon as you grab a handful of break and the suspension loads up, you're pretty much committed to a straight line... A direction change at that point requires you to let off the breaks unless you really feel like having the front wheel tuck in under you and a trip to hospital.

Speeding biker makes it sound like the guy was doing 250km/h or something.

This is what happens when there's a quota to fill...sadly, people do stupid things...it is about that time of the year, is it not?

Nonsense: Traffic cop kills speeding biker.

Nonsense, there are speed limit signs posted on roads. I'm sure the biker must at some stage in his live have heard that he shouldn't speed. Willfully ignoring that, he speeded, the traffic official saw that and and well, we know the end result. If he wasn't speeding the traffic officer would just have stood back with nothing to do.

Face it, there are consequences to actions, on both sides, but one was doing something he was told not to and the other one was doing his job.

Don't be a sucker for the headline. Common sense states that a registration number and postal fine is superior to two deaths. It also states that the laws of physics hold true even when carrying a traffic cop badge.

I'd really love to see their handbook

When trying to stop a speeding vehicle:

A) Jump in front of speeding vehicle.
i) Do not take vehicle condition into account.
ii) Do not take driver awareness into account.
iii) Do not take photo to issue summons at a later stage
iiii) Do not under any circumstances use personal judgement.

Oh please,i've been stopped doing ~107km/h in a 100 zone for a random check, narrowly missed the guinea-fowl(speedcop),they come running with guns when I get to stop 50meters away saying I'm trying to kill them and evading arrest. Same has happened to a few of us...

Dear officer,go read up on newton,an object in motion tends to stay in motion - I can't stop on a dime without flying

Darwin wins again. The biker shouldn't have been speeding and a very special round of applause for the dumb **** that steps into the way of a speeding vehicle. Both are at fault for taking the others lives. Sorry but no, the both should have known better

Exactly. It's not rocket science.

Sounds a little bit iffy... What if the biker wasn't even speeding, and the traffic dept are just covering their tracks for the action of one very stupid cop?

Either way, bikes are far more dangerous to jump in front of because you don't have two headlights, that are quite far apart, to judge how far the bike is... If would be very easy to think the bike is further than you think is it (because it looks smaller than it is when next to cars on the road...). I'm blaming the cop... How is it a good idea to play in the traffic?

So if he had gone on to plough into a family minivan coming the other way and killed all of them? Then you would all be saying how useless the cop was for not stopping him.

Fact is, cops stop people because they just dont know what you will go on to do.
